The picture at the top of the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Classic rankings has changed after Knightsbridge’s commanding success in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar, with trainer Bill Mott now represented by two horses among the leading three.
Sovereignty remains at the head of the standings, while Knightsbridge has moved sharply up the list after his Grade 1 success on Saturday. Mott’s other leading contender, Baeza, also remains inside the top 10.
Breeders’ Cup Classic rankings
Sovereignty holds first place with 381 votes, including 27 first-place selections. Defending Classic winner Forever Young is second on 343 votes, while Knightsbridge has risen from sixth to third with 301.
The latest standings underline the depth of Mott’s challenge as the championship approaches. Knightsbridge’s Pacific Classic victory provided the biggest movement in the top three, while Sovereignty retained the overall advantage built through his earlier campaign.
Magnitude occupies fourth place with 256 votes. The Dubai World Cup and Stephen Foster Stakes winner remains one of the leading older contenders heading towards Keeneland.
The next two positions belong to three-year-olds who have already made their mark at the highest level.
Golden Tempo is fifth with 253 votes after victories in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. Renegade follows in sixth with 190 votes after finishing second in the Kentucky Derby and later winning the Jim Dandy Stakes.
Baeza, another member of Mott’s stable, is seventh with 110 votes. The runner-up in the Stephen Foster Stakes was subsequently fourth in the Whitney Stakes, keeping the four-year-old firmly in the championship picture.
Nitrogen is eighth on 99 votes after finishing second in the Whitney Stakes. Commandment sits ninth with 76 votes following a Florida Derby victory and a second-place finish in the Belmont Stakes.
Antiquarian completes the top 10 with 67 votes after finishing third in the Whitney Stakes.
The standings provide an indication of how the leading contenders are viewed by the international panel, but they do not determine qualification or selection for the Classic. The Breeders’ Cup itself notes that the rankings have no bearing on qualification or selection.
The Pacific Classic, however, carried greater significance for Knightsbridge. His victory at Del Mar was a designated Challenge Series race for the Classic, giving the Mott-trained runner an automatic starting position under the qualifying system.
Sovereignty had already secured his place through his Whitney Stakes success, while Magnitude gained his position through the Dubai World Cup. Forever Young also holds an automatic place through the Saudi Cup.
The Classic is scheduled for Keeneland on October 31, with the 1¼-mile dirt contest carrying a $7 million purse and a maximum field of 14 starters.
With more major races still to come before the championship, the order at the top can change again. For now, Sovereignty remains the horse to beat on the rankings, while Knightsbridge’s rise has given Mott a second prominent contender and added another layer to the developing Classic picture.
