Sovereignty has moved to the top of the first 2026 rankings for the Breeders’ Cup Classic after a commanding victory in Saturday’s Whitney Stakes at Saratoga, putting the reigning Horse of the Year at the head of an increasingly competitive championship picture.

The Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings place the leading 10 contenders under consideration for the $7 million Classic, which will be contested over 1¼ miles at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, on October 31.

Sovereignty collected 392 votes, including 26 first-place selections, following the Whitney victory. The four-year-old, trained by Hall of Fame conditioner Bill Mott, had begun the season with a second-place finish in the Oaklawn Handicap and a third in the Stephen Foster Stakes before finding his best form at Saratoga.

The Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner also topped the 2025 rankings, although a fever forced a late withdrawal from last year’s Classic at Del Mar.

Forever Young, the defending Classic winner and Saudi Cup winner, sits second with 360 votes, including 13 first-place selections. The Japanese-trained runner remains firmly in the championship conversation as the season moves toward its autumn climax.

Magnitude occupies third with 272 votes after victories in the Dubai World Cup and Stephen Foster Stakes. Golden Tempo, winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, is fourth on 254 votes.

Renegade is fifth with 197 votes. The three-year-old finished second in the Kentucky Derby before winning the Arkansas Derby and Jim Dandy Stakes, giving the Todd Pletcher-trained runner a strong résumé heading into the second half of the campaign.

Knightsbridge holds sixth place with 178 votes after winning the Monmouth Cup Stakes in July. The five-year-old is another member of Mott’s leading group and adds further depth to the early rankings.

Nitrogen is seventh on 163 votes after finishing second in the Whitney, while Baeza occupies eighth with 111 votes following a runner-up finish in the Stephen Foster and fourth-place finish at Saratoga.

Commandment is ninth with 92 votes. The three-year-old won the Florida Derby and subsequently finished second in the Belmont Stakes and Jim Dandy Stakes.

Antiquarian completes the top 10 with 79 votes after finishing third in the Whitney. The five-year-old is trained by Pletcher and rounds out a list that includes a mixture of established older horses and prominent members of the current three-year-old crop.

Three horses already have automatic places in the Classic through qualifying victories. Sovereignty secured his position through the Whitney, Forever Young through the Saudi Cup and Magnitude through the Dubai World Cup.

The rankings are compiled by a panel drawn from Thoroughbred racing media, horseplayers and members of the racing directors and secretaries panel.

The next rankings will be published on August 25, followed by updates on September 8, September 22, September 29 and October 6.

The opening standings give Sovereignty an early advantage, but the margin between the leading contenders leaves plenty of room for the picture to change as the major autumn preparations unfold.

Sovereignty leads the standings with 392 total votes and 26 first-place votes. Forever Young is second with 360 votes and 13 first-place votes, while Magnitude occupies third with 272 votes and two first-place votes.

Golden Tempo is fourth with 254 votes, followed by Renegade in fifth with 197. Knightsbridge stands sixth on 178 votes, with Nitrogen seventh on 163.

Baeza is eighth with 111 votes, Commandment ninth with 92 and Antiquarian 10th with 79. None of the final seven horses received a first-place vote.
