The three-year-old gelding, trained by Kevin Attard for TEC Racing, will face five rivals in the 1 1/16-mile contest on the main track as contenders look to strengthen their claims ahead of the 167th running of Canada’s historic $1 million classic on August 15.
Yukon Striker has shown plenty of promise in his short career and now takes the next step against stronger opposition.
Yukon Striker race preview: The Woodbine contender enters the Marine Stakes after two encouraging victories that have highlighted his ability and progression.
A son of Maclean’s Music and the Stormy Atlantic mare Thee Pie, Yukon Striker began his career last November at Woodbine over 5 ½ furlongs. Despite facing early trouble after being forced inward at the break and later steadied during the race, he recovered strongly to take command in the final furlong and score by one length.
His return as a three-year-old on May 17 produced another impressive performance, with a 1 Âľ-length victory over six furlongs on the main track.
Attard believes the gelding has continued to mature since his debut.
“I think both races were impressive,” Attard said. “His first start this year, he broke inwards, but then he settled into stride nicely and showed a lot of good energy down the lane.”
“With any young horse, you hope to see them grow, mentally and physically, from 2 to 3 and he has done that and done it impressively.”
The trainer, who has already captured three editions of Canada’s major classic with Moira in 2022, Caitlinhergrtness in 2024 and Mansetti last year, is hoping Yukon Striker can earn an opportunity in the longer-distance feature.
The Marine Stakes will provide an important test of whether the talented runner can handle the demands of a route race.
“Obviously, the million-dollar question when it comes to racing in a $1 million race is if a horse can get the distance,” Attard said. “There’s no denying he has plenty of talent and we’d love to be in the Plate, so we will find out those answers as we go along.”
Yukon Striker was purchased for $40,000 at the CTHS Premier Yearling Sale and continues to impress his connections at Woodbine. Groom Richard Taylor has been closely involved with the gelding’s development.
The horse has recorded four workouts since his May success, including two four-furlong drills and two six-furlong sessions. His latest effort on June 20 saw him cover four furlongs in :48.00.
Attard said the morning work has shown a horse eager to improve.
“If I had to take one thing away from them all, it’s that he’s a horse who wants to be out there in the mornings and wants to put the work in,” he said. “His last breeze was the perfect example of that – determined down the lane, strong to the finish and strong on the gallop out.”
The Marine Stakes has a long history at Woodbine, with Compactor winning the first edition in 1956. Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield holds the record for most victories in the race, with five wins.
The six-horse field for the Marine Stakes (G3) is led by Yukon Striker, who will be ridden by Pietro Moran. The complete field is:
Yukon Striker’s step into stakes competition comes at an important stage of the season, with the Marine Stakes expected to reveal which three-year-olds are ready to emerge as leading names for the upcoming classic challenge.
