Both fillies produced determined finishes over one mile and one-sixteenth on the main track, winning by three-quarters of a length and achieving significant milestones in their careers.
Raiding Party made a successful transition from turf to the synthetic surface, while Crystal Visions ended an eight-race losing streak to claim her first stakes title. https://racebuzz.com/The two contests showcased patient rides, well-timed challenges and strong finishes across Woodbine’s stakes programme.
Raiding Party Wins Ontario Damsel Stakes on Synthetic Debut
Raiding Party (IRE) delivered an impressive performance in the Ontario Damsel Stakes for three-year-old fillies, securing her first career stakes victory under Ryan Munger for trainer Brendan Walsh. Making her first appearance on a synthetic surface after five consecutive turf starts, the chestnut filly demonstrated her adaptability and finished strongly to defeat a competitive field of six.
Cool Times took the early lead under Jose Campos after breaking from the inside, establishing a three-length advantage through the opening quarter-mile in 23.67 seconds. Dixie Law, the recent winner of the Wonder Where Stakes, settled into second, while Raiding Party tracked the leaders in third along the rail. Hot Mash, Ontology and Bold Time followed closely behind.
Cool Times increased her advantage to five lengths along the backstretch, reaching the half-mile mark in 46.75 seconds. However, the leader began to face pressure approaching the final turn as Dixie Law advanced and Raiding Party moved closer behind her.
At the entrance to the straight, Raiding Party launched a three-wide challenge outside Dixie Law, and the pair passed the tiring Cool Times. Munger continued to drive his mount forward as Dixie Law responded gamely, setting up a close finish between the two challengers.
Raiding Party maintained her advantage in the final stages and crossed the line three-quarters of a length ahead of Dixie Law. She completed the eight-and-a-half-furlong contest in 1:42.52, with Cool Times holding third and Hot Mash finishing fourth.
The result improved Raiding Party’s career record to three wins, one second and one third from six starts. Owned by Larry R. Rodgers, Coast Racing, represented by Jamie Lamonica, and Fick Farms, she also earned her first black-type victory.
Munger said the race developed as he had expected, with Dixie Law providing the target he wanted to follow before the pair challenged Cool Times in the straight. He credited Walsh for bringing the filly to Woodbine in excellent condition and said Raiding Party responded well when asked to move forward.
Bred in Ireland by Barry Moorhead, Raiding Party was a debut winner over a turf route at Keeneland as a two-year-old. She opened her three-year-old campaign with a second-place finish against winners at Churchill Downs before winning a mile turf allowance. She subsequently finished third in the Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes at Del Mar before placing sixth in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks.
Her Ontario Damsel success represented a significant step forward, as she demonstrated that her established turf form could translate effectively to Woodbine’s synthetic track.
Crystal Visions Secures Inaugural Silver Creek Stakes
Crystal Visions produced a determined late challenge to win the inaugural $150,000 Silver Creek Stakes, giving trainer Stu Simon and jockey Keveh Nicholls a notable success at Woodbine. The four-year-old Ontario-bred filly secured her first career stakes victory after a patient trip in the one-mile-and-one-sixteenth contest for fillies and mares aged four and older.
Six runners contested the race following the withdrawals of Ella It Is and Olivia Rose. Dazzling Move broke alertly from post eight and established the early lead, with Hurricane Clair settling in second and Crystal Visions positioned third along the inside rail.
Dazzling Move maintained the advantage through the opening stages, recording a half-mile time of 47.84 seconds and reaching the six-furlong point in 1:12.06. Hurricane Clair continued to apply pressure from the outside, while Nicholls kept Crystal Visions close to the pace and conserved ground around the turn.
With three-sixteenths of a mile remaining, Nicholls guided Crystal Visions away from the rail and into the two path, allowing the filly to close on Dazzling Move. The leader came under increasing pressure from Campos, while Crystal Visions gradually gained ground with a clear run towards the finish.
Half a furlong from the wire, Crystal Visions moved into the lead and continued strongly to the line. She defeated Dazzling Move by three-quarters of a length, while Hurricane Clair finished another neck behind in third. Speedy Freeze completed the first four.
The victory ended an eight-race losing streak for Crystal Visions and rewarded her connections after a series of difficult recent outings. She had recorded several competitive efforts in allowance company before finishing seventh in the Grade 3 Trillium Stakes and eighth in the restricted Belfountain Stakes.
Nicholls praised the filly’s response to the instructions, explaining that the plan had been to keep her near the inside and take an opening when one became available. He said Crystal Visions produced an excellent performance and fought strongly throughout the closing stages.
Simon acknowledged that earlier decisions had contributed to the filly’s disappointing recent results, but he believed the Silver Creek Stakes offered a more suitable opportunity. He also described Crystal Visions as a consistent performer who deserved to become a stakes winner.
Bred in Ontario by Charles Fipke, Crystal Visions won her career debut in a five-and-a-half-furlong main-track sprint before finishing third in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes as a juvenile. By Bee Jersey out of You Make Luvin Fun, she improved her record to three wins, six seconds and three thirds from 18 starts. The Silver Creek Stakes also marked her first victory in five attempts over the distance.
Woodbine Stakes Victories on October 10 featured Raiding Party’s successful synthetic debut in the Ontario Damsel Stakes and Crystal Visions’ breakthrough performance in the inaugural Silver Creek Stakes. Both fillies won by three-quarters of a length, with Raiding Party earning her first black-type success and Crystal Visions ending an eight-race losing streak to secure her first stakes title.
