The 2025 thoroughbred racing season at Woodbine Racetrack came to its close on Sunday with jockey Rafael Hernandez, trainer Mark Casse and owner Bruno Schickedanz finishing the year as the meet’s top performers, capping another competitive season at Woodbine Racetrack.
Hernandez secured the riding title with 149 wins. The Puerto Rico-born jockey, a regular presence at Woodbine since 2015, collected his second riding championship, having previously led the standings in 2020. His season featured several notable victories, including success in the Grade 2 Kennedy Road Stakes and the Breeders’ Stakes, the concluding leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.
Over the course of the Woodbine racing season 2025, Hernandez also led all jockeys in purse earnings with $6.4 million (USD) and finished on top in the stakes category with 23 victories, 11 of them at graded level.
Pietro Moran ended the season second among jockeys with 140 wins, while Fraser Aebly placed third with 95 victories.
Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse captured his 17th Woodbine training title after saddling 97 winners throughout the meet. His runners included 12 stakes winners and amassed more than $5.7 million (USD) in purse earnings at Woodbine.
Martin Drexler finished second in the trainer standings with 82 wins, while Kevin Attard ranked third with 65 victories. Attard’s stable recorded the second-highest purse earnings total of the season, collecting $4.2 million (USD).
Among owners, Bruno Schickedanz earned his 11th consecutive Woodbine owners’ title by wins. Horses carrying his colours accounted for 80 victories and more than $2 million (USD) in purse earnings during the season.
Chiefswood Stables Limited finished second in the owners’ standings with 27 wins and $1.6 million in purse earnings. Gary Barber ranked third by wins with 22 and $1.3 million (USD), while Al and Bill Ulwelling finished third in purse earnings with $1.4 million and recorded 19 victories.
Maximum Fifty topped the individual horse standings with six wins. Indy One, Love You Lippy and Souper Success followed closely, each registering five victories during the meet.
Classic honours were shared among standout performers. Mansetti, ridden by apprentice Pietro Moran, won The King’s Plate for trainer Kevin Attard and owners Al and Bill Ulwelling. No Time claimed the Woodbine Oaks with John Velazquez aboard for trainer Mark Casse and owner Gary Barber.
Other major race winners during the season included Silawi (IRE) in the Canadian International (G1T), Notable Speech in the Woodbine Mile (G1T), She Feels Pretty in the E.P. Taylor Stakes (G1T), Argos in the Summer Stakes (G1T), Corsia Veloce in the Natalma Stakes (G1T), No Nay Hudson (IRE) in the Nearctic Stakes (G2T), Breath Away in the Dance Smartly Stakes (G2T), Ready for Shirl in the Canadian Stakes (G2) and Gas Me Up in the King Edward Stakes (G2T).
