A rapidly improving filly with a bright future ahead of her will step into stakes company for the first time on Saturday when Winplaceandshow bids for a third consecutive victory in the $100,000 Azalea Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Azalea Stakes 2026.

The seven-furlong contest for three-year-old fillies headlines an 11-race Father’s Day eve programme and has attracted a field packed with last-time-out winners, setting the stage for a fascinating test of emerging talent.

Trained by veteran horseman Joe Orseno for D. J. Stable and Robert Cotran, Winplaceandshow arrives in the best form of her career. The Florida-bred filly has steadily progressed through the ranks since her debut and now faces the toughest assignment of her young career.

Purchased for $90,000 at Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale, the daughter of promising bloodlines quickly justified her connections’ confidence. After finishing third on debut behind future graded winner My Miss Mo, she broke her maiden impressively before continuing her development this season.

Her campaign gathered momentum with a determined success in a Florida-bred allowance contest in March, before she produced a standout performance over Saturday’s distance in May. On that occasion, she powered clear by 7½ lengths against open company, earning the highest speed figure of her career and announcing herself as a filly worth following.

Orseno has been encouraged not only by her recent victories but also by her versatility.

The trainer believes Winplaceandshow possesses the tactical speed to race prominently or settle behind rivals if circumstances demand, a valuable asset in what appears a well-matched field. Edwin Gonzalez retains the ride from stall one.

Among her principal rivals is fellow Florida-bred Flowko, trained and owned by Rory Miller. Consistent throughout her career, Flowko has finished in the first three in eight of her 12 starts and arrives on the back of an authoritative allowance success against older horses at Gulfstream.

The daughter of With Distinction has overcome setbacks along the way, including a severe skin infection that interrupted her progress last year. Since returning to full health she has regained her form, placing in several competitive events before returning to winning ways at the end of May.

Miller believes his filly deserves her chance at this level and expects her to be competitive if she secures a favourable trip.

Another intriguing contender is Late Night Text from the powerful barn of Saffie Joseph Jr. The filly made an immediate impact for her new connections when scoring over the course and distance in April. That performance produced the highest previous speed figure in the field and suggested further improvement may be forthcoming.

Permian Basin also commands respect after defeating male rivals in a seven-furlong optional claimer at Tampa Bay Downs last month. Her recent form ties in closely with Flowko, adding another layer of intrigue to the contest.

Sorokin, successful on only her second start at Tampa in March, brings untapped potential to the race, while Wander Woman arrives after a commanding victory over male opposition at Gulfstream and could prove dangerous if building on that effort.

The Azalea Stakes 2026 may not feature an established star, but it does showcase a group of fillies on upward trajectories. With several last-start winners lining up and multiple contenders still open to improvement, Saturday’s feature looks one of the most competitive races on the Gulfstream programme.

For Winplaceandshow, however, victory would represent another significant step forward and strengthen the belief that even bigger opportunities may lie ahead later in the season.
