Powerful Finish Seals Whimsical Stakes Glory for Reagan’s Flame

Reagan’s Flame finishing strongly to win Whimsical Stakes at Woodbine

Racing at Woodbine Racetrack on Saturday offered a compelling early-season feature as the fillies and mares lined up for the Grade 3 Whimsical Stakes, a race that quickly developed into a sharply run contest before unfolding into a sustained late battle down the straight. The pace was honest from the outset, setting the stage for a closer to emerge when it mattered most.

The Whimsical Stakes result Woodbine 2026 highlighted a decisive late surge from Reagan’s Flame in the closing stages.

Breaking from stall four, Reagan’s Flame showed early alertness and settled just behind the front rank as Ms. Bucherro dictated terms on the rail, tracked closely by Brindi (IRE) and American Women through a sharp opening quarter. The tempo remained strong into the turn, with positions beginning to shift as stamina and timing became increasingly important.

Approaching the bend, the field tightened. Ms. Bucherro continued to hold a narrow advantage while American Women moved up to press, and the half-mile split confirmed the sustained gallop that was testing every runner in the six-furlong contest. At this stage, Reagan’s Flame was taken back to last by jockey Sahin Civaci, a move that would ultimately prove decisive.

Turning for home, Lithe Spirit made a bold three-wide bid to strike the front, briefly appearing to have momentum on her side. However, widest of all, Reagan’s Flame was beginning to build serious pressure, travelling strongly as the leaders began to feel the pace they had set earlier.

Inside the final furlong, Civaci asked for maximum effort and Reagan’s Flame responded with a powerful, sustained run, reeling in Lithe Spirit before edging clear close to the line to win by a length and a half. Lithe Spirit held on for second, with Quadruple (GB) staying on steadily from off the pace to finish third. Maximum Fifty was withdrawn before the race.

Speaking after the victory, Sahin Civaci reflected on the race dynamics and his decision to settle off the pace before launching late.

“Our horse broke really well and I knew a few would go forward,” he said. “I wanted to sit just behind them. There wasn’t much room on the inside at one point, but I managed to work my way around. Once she found her stride in the straight, she really picked up.”

The win marked a significant milestone for Reagan’s Flame, securing her first graded success while continuing her strong form on synthetic surfaces. The five-year-old mare has now won seven of her 20 career starts and arrived here off the back of an impressive victory earlier in the season.

Now trained by Saffie Joseph Jr, Reagan’s Flame had been campaigned over longer distances in recent starts, making the return to sprinting a key talking point beforehand. Civaci admitted the drop back in trip required some reading of the race but felt confidence growing once she left the paddock in good order.

“I saw she had been running over further, so I was a little unsure about the six furlongs,” he said. “But she felt sharp beforehand, and I just trusted her turn of foot late on.”

Civaci, who enjoyed a standout 2024 campaign at Woodbine, continues to build on his reputation as one of the leading riders in the region, while also expanding his international opportunities through select engagements.

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr and connections will now look ahead to further opportunities at a similar level, with Reagan’s Flame’s late-running style proving well suited to strongly run sprint contests.
