A competitive evening of racing at Wetherby Racecourse on Monday, 15 June, produced seven races and a host of notable performances, with jockey Clifford Lee emerging as the standout figure after riding three winners across the card. Victories were shared among a range of trainers, while Starlight Mirage, Machadadorp, Thornaby Annie, Roaring Ralph, Bayraat, Crafty Spirit and Bradbury all added their names to the winners’ list during an action-packed meeting.
Starlight Mirage made a winning start to proceedings in the EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Class 3) (GBB Race). Ridden by Clifford Lee and trained by K. R. Burke for the Exors of the Late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, the filly delivered a polished performance to land the opening contest in 1m 26.49s. Wise And Wonderful stayed on for second place, while March Lilly completed the placings in third.
Machadadorp followed up with victory in the Novice Stakes (Class 4) (GBB Race). Oisin Murphy partnered the Andrew Balding-trained runner to success for owner Cayton Park Stud Limited, with the winner stopping the clock at 1m 25.02s. Rogue Invincible finished second after keeping on well, while Crossbar secured third.
Thornaby Annie added another success for Clifford Lee in the Heineken 0.0 Handicap Stakes (Class 6). Trained by Adrian Nicholls for Ingleby Bloodstock & The Fallen Angels, the winner recorded a time of 1m 38.67s. Inferno filled the runner-up position, with Thestral taking third place.
Roaring Ralph came out on top in the Amstel Apprentice Handicap Stakes (Class 5). Guided by Rhys Elliott and trained by Michael Dods for owner Mrs C. E. Dods, the winner completed the contest in 1m 39.73s. Popeye Doyle finished second, while Flying Fletcher claimed third.
Bayraat proved strongest in Division I of the Handicap Stakes (Class 6). The Tom Tate-trained runner provided Clifford Lee with his third winner of the meeting while carrying the colours of T T Racing. Bayraat crossed the line in 1m 05.96s ahead of Pinpoint in second and Captain Cess in third.
Crafty Spirit secured Division II of the Handicap Stakes (Class 6) for jockey Barry McHugh and trainer John Wainwright. Representing Caballo Racing Two, the winner completed the sprint in 1m 05.78s. Ski Angel finished second, while Dark Kestrel took third place.
Bradbury rounded off the card by landing the concluding Handicap Stakes (Class 6). Kevin Stott partnered the Edward Bethell-trained runner to victory for Clarendon Thoroughbred Racing, with the winner registering a time of 2m 08.66s over the extended trip. Clear Above finished second, while Give Me Sun completed the first three home.
The seven-race programme featured a mixture of emerging talent and experienced campaigners, while Clifford Lee’s treble provided one of the meeting’s most notable achievements. Several stables also enjoyed productive evenings as the Yorkshire venue delivered another competitive fixture on the Flat racing calendar.
