Wetherby will welcome leading trainers Dan Skelton and John Nallen for the opening day of its two-day Charlie Hall Meeting on Friday, October 30, with several promising contenders set to feature across the six-race programme. The £75,000 Crossley Handicap Chase and the Listed Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers To Follow Wensleydale Juvenile Hurdle will headline the afternoon’s action.

The meeting will provide another opportunity for Skelton to strengthen his impressive seasonal record, while Nallen will look to continue his success with promising young jumpers at the Yorkshire venue.

Kingston Narcissus to Lead Skelton’s Challenge in Crossley Handicap Chase

The £75,000 Crossley Handicap Chase, scheduled for 3.35pm, will serve as the principal attraction on Friday, with Kingston Narcissus expected to lead Dan Skelton’s challenge.

Skelton, Wetherby’s most successful trainer over the last five seasons, will arrive following a productive period that will include significant successes at Ffos Las and Cheltenham. He will also continue his pursuit of Martin Pipe’s seasonal record of 243 winners.

Kingston Narcissus will look to build on three consecutive runner-up finishes since joining Skelton at the beginning of the summer. His latest performance will have come in the Summer Plate at Market Rasen in July, where he will have finished just a neck behind the winner.

Stablemate Matterhorn will also feature in the original stable line-up, although his participation will remain subject to the final declarations. The top-weight will have returned to action with a seventh-place finish at Ffos Las earlier in the month.

Local contender Prairie Wolf will make his seasonal return for Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith. The nine-year-old will look to continue the progress he will have shown towards the end of last season, when he will have secured consecutive handicap chase victories at Newcastle and Newbury.

He will also aim to improve on his third-place finish in last year’s renewal, which Thistle Ask will have won. The winner will subsequently have added the G2 Haldon Gold Cup and G2 Desert Orchid Chase to his record before finishing second to Jonbon in the G1 Clarence House Chase.

Parkinson will consider Prairie Wolf ready for the challenge following an extended break. The trainer will also point to the improvement he will have shown since undergoing wind surgery at the beginning of last season, although the quality of opposition will provide another significant test.

Breaking Cover will add further strength to the field for Anthony Honeyball. The contender will arrive on a career-high rating of 142 after recording three successive victories over shorter distances. His latest success will have come at Kelso earlier this month, where he will have defeated Primoz, trained by Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore.

Conditional jockey Chad Bament will continue his partnership with the progressive chaser. Honeyball will expect the flat, left-handed track and good ground to suit his runner, although the longer distance will provide an additional examination of his ability.

Crebilly will also enter the contest with encouraging recent form for Jonjo and AJ O’Neill. The nine-year-old will bring experience from his second-place finish in the Plate at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival and a comfortable victory at Worcester last month.

The Gloucestershire stable will also be represented by Genois, who will seek another successful appearance at Wetherby. The ten-year-old will have won this race in 2024 before adding another course-and-distance victory on Boxing Day last year.

Minella Rockett to Head Nallen’s Wensleydale Hurdle Challenge

The Listed Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers To Follow Wensleydale Juvenile Hurdle, scheduled for 3.00pm, will provide another major attraction on the opening-day programme.

John Nallen will send out Minella Rockett following the success of his former charge Minella Study in last year’s renewal. Trained by Adam Nicol, Minella Study will have provided another example of the Irish handler’s ability to develop promising young jumpers.

Minella Rockett will arrive with experience over both hurdles and Flat distances. He will have opened his hurdling career with a victory at Limerick in early July before returning to the Flat, where he will have secured handicap successes at the Galway Festival and Naas.

Nallen will regard the Wetherby contest as a suitable opportunity for the youngster, particularly with favourable ground expected and no penalty for his earlier hurdle victory.

The trainer will also highlight the gelding’s strength, attitude and staying pedigree. A successful performance will potentially open the way for a campaign in major four-year-old hurdle contests during the spring, although Nallen will also remain interested in the horse’s future as a sale prospect.

The opposition will include Wicksey, who will represent Ben Haslam following juvenile hurdle victories at Stratford and Cartmel. Charles Darnay will also add interest to the contest for James Owen, with the talented Flat recruit expected to provide another challenge.

The Wetherby Charlie Hall Meeting will continue on Saturday, October 31, when the £100,000 G2 Charlie Hall Chase and the £62,500 G2 Hurdle will provide the principal attractions of the second day.

The opening day of the Wetherby Charlie Hall Meeting will feature Kingston Narcissus, Prairie Wolf and Breaking Cover in the Crossley Handicap Chase, while Minella Rockett will lead John Nallen’s challenge in the Listed Wensleydale Juvenile Hurdle. Dan Skelton, Joel Parkinson, Sue Smith, Anthony Honeyball and John Nallen will all have runners to follow across Friday’s programme.
