A competitive afternoon of National Hunt racing awaits at Warwick Racecourse on Sunday, 8 March, where an eight-race programme will unfold from 1:40 pm to 5:23 pm. The card blends novice hurdles, handicap contests, a mares’ steeplechase and a demanding staying chase, offering a varied test of speed, stamina and jumping ability.
The meeting opens with a large field in a conditional jockeys’ hurdle and gradually builds toward the afternoon’s stamina-testing handicap events before concluding with a National Hunt Flat Race for emerging prospects.
The action begins at 1:40 pm with The Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle Race, a Class 4 contest over two miles worth £9,000. With 13 runners declared, the opening race should be competitive as conditional riders look to secure an early advantage on the card.
At 2:10 pm, the focus shifts to novice talent in The Novices’ Hurdle Race. This Class 4 event over 2m carries a £10,000 purse and has attracted 11 runners, many of whom will be aiming to build experience and establish themselves in the hurdling division.
Another novice hurdle follows at 2:40 pm, again titled The Novices’ Hurdle Race, where 10 runners will contest the two-mile trip for £10,000. The race offers further opportunity for developing jumpers to demonstrate their ability over hurdles.
The programme then moves to a longer test at 3:10 pm with The Royal Pug Handicap Hurdle Race. Run over 2m 5f 5y, this Class 4 handicap offers ÂŁ9,000 in prize money and features 10 runners, with stamina expected to play a significant role as the distance increases.
Attention then turns to the fences at 3:40 pm with The Mares’ Handicap Steeple Chase. The Class 4 mares’ contest over 2m 54y carries a £15,000 prize fund, although the field is smaller with six runners declared. Despite the reduced numbers, the race should still provide an engaging test of jumping and pace.
At 4:13 pm, the card features The Cheltenham Handicap Hurdle Race, a Class 3 staying contest over 3m 2f with ÂŁ18,000 in prize money. The race has attracted a competitive field where several runners arrive with consistent recent form.
