A full eight-race National Hunt programme was conducted at Warwick Racecourse on Sunday, 8 March, where runners competed across hurdle races, steeplechases and a concluding National Hunt Flat contest. The afternoon fixture brought together a mixture of novice performers and experienced handicap runners, producing a sequence of clear results across the card.
The opening contest, the Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (Class 4), was claimed by Newtown Rambler, who was ridden by Oakley Brown, trained by Adrian Keatley, and owned by Keatley Racing, Doherty and Manson. Travelling steadily through the early stages, the runner responded well after the final hurdle and secured victory by 1½ lengths over So You Know, while A Good Yomp finished third.
Race two, the Novices’ Hurdle (Class 4) (GBB Race), saw Wilstar record a comfortable success. The winner was ridden by Sean Bowen, trained by Olly Murphy, and owned by Mrs Diana L. Whateley. Maintaining a prominent position throughout, the runner moved clear in the closing stages to defeat Talakan by 1¾ lengths, with Great Fleet completing the first three.
The following race, the Novices’ Hurdle (Class 4) (GBB Race), produced victory for Cosmic Connection, ridden by Freddie Gordon, trained by Chris Gordon, and owned by Mr D. S. Dennis. The runner travelled smoothly before maintaining the advantage to win by 1¼ lengths from Road To Wembley, while Ionian finished third.
The Royal Pug Handicap Hurdle (Class 4) provided one of the closer finishes of the meeting. Mount Anglesby, ridden by Tom Broughton, trained by Alastair Ralph, and owned by Mr M. Edwards, produced a determined effort after the final hurdle and held off Kel du Large by ½ length, while Jimmy Hurdstrom secured third place.
In the Mares’ Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 4) (GBB Race), Irish Chorus delivered a fluent display over fences. The mare was ridden by Tom Bellamy, trained by Alan King, and owned by Mrs E. Roberts. Jumping accurately throughout, the runner drew clear in the closing stages to defeat Politacus by 2¾ lengths, with She Is For Me Boys finishing third.
The sixth contest, the Handicap Hurdle (Class 3), went to Super Survivor, ridden by Gavin Sheehan, trained by Jamie Snowden, and owned by Neil Goulden, Kevin and Sue Hopgood. Travelling comfortably through the race, the runner asserted after the final hurdle to defeat Porter In The Park by 2¾ lengths, while Oh My Johnny finished third.
Race seven, the Volcano Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 3) (GBB Race), saw House of Habsburg produce one of the most decisive performances of the afternoon. The winner was ridden by Jack Tudor, trained by Christian Williams, and owned by Whites Property Limited and Robert James. Moving clear approaching the closing stages, the gelding crossed the line 11 lengths ahead of El Granjero, with Unanswered Prayers completing the placings.
The meeting concluded with the Open National Hunt Flat Race (Class 5) (GBB Race). Merry Away, ridden by Ben Jones, trained by Ben Pauling, and owned by Mr K. Dole, travelled prominently before asserting in the closing furlong to defeat Presley by 1¼ lengths, while Chinese Whispers finished third.
The eight-race programme produced a balanced afternoon of National Hunt racing, with several runners delivering clear performances across hurdles, steeplechases and the concluding bumper.
