The 246th edition of the Betfred Derby Festival at Epsom Downs delivered thrilling moments despite the challenges posed by a rain-soaked track. Among the standout performers was Small Fry, who continued a stellar weekend for Gary and Josh Moore, notching their third win in 24 hours in the Encore Lifestyle Northern Dancer Handicap.

Ridden confidently by apprentice jockey Ashley Lewis, Small Fry handled the mile-and-a-half contest with poise. The young rider, already victorious on the horse at Chester, showed maturity beyond his years. The Moore family’s confidence in both horse and rider was validated, as Jamie Moore expressed pride in the pair, especially highlighting Lewis’s dedication to managing his weight and preparing for the ride.

Success continued for northern connections as War Hawk surged home in the 10-furlong Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Lester Piggott Handicap. Under tricky conditions, he navigated the stands’ side with determination to clinch the win at 9-2 odds. Trainer Simon Crisford, who conditions the horse with his son Ed, praised the gelding’s ability to finish strongly despite a difficult run-in, noting that the wet ground may have actually played to the horse’s strengths.

Crisford also commented on his Derby runner Sea Scout, who finished 11th in the feature race. Though slightly keen early on, the colt showed promise and is expected to mature with time and experience.

Meanwhile, Sondad brought the festival to a close with a commanding win in the JRA Tokyo Trophy Handicap. Ridden by Joanna Mason, the four-year-old showed surprising adaptability to the heavy going, despite previous form on firmer tracks. Mason’s familiarity with the horse and her confidence in his progress played a key role in their triumph.

Through rain and rough conditions, the resilience of both horses and riders was on full display, capping off an unforgettable day at Epsom Downs.
