American-bred six-year-old Tumbarumba is set to test himself over a longer trip in Saturday’s $12-million Dubai World Cup, a challenge that could define his career. Though best known for his mile (1600m) form in the United States, the Wathnan Racing-owned gelding has taken recent strides over extended distances, showing a resilience and versatility that has excited his connections.
Foaled in Louisiana in 2020, Tumbarumba is one of just 837 horses from his crop and has already established a reputation as a stakes performer. The gelding has four stakes victories at eight furlongs, with half of these wins coming since Wathnan Racing acquired him in mid-2024. His last autumn campaign saw him finish fourth behind G1 Saudi Cup runner-up Nysos in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, before joining the stable of Hamad Al Jehani late last year.
Tumbarumba’s form over longer distances has been promising. A runner-up finish to Imperial Emperor in the 1900m Group 1 Al Maktoum Challenge was followed by a third-place effort behind Forever Young in the $20-million contest in Riyadh on February 14, beaten less than five lengths. In just 14 starts for Wathnan, he has accumulated over $2.7 million in prize money, showcasing both consistency and competitive spirit.
Case Clay, Wathnan’s US Racing and Bloodstock Manager, expressed optimism after arriving in Dubai. “I give credit to Hamad Al Jehani and to Brian Lynch,” he said. “This will be the longest he’s gone, but Hamad has noted that Tumbarumba has taken a step forward since the Saudi Cup and looks tighter, which is encouraging.”
Wathnan Racing has long pursued a strategy of acquiring horses with untapped potential, and Tumbarumba is a prime example of that vision. Clay highlighted the approach: “Hit Show, the defending World Cup champion, falls into the same category. The goal is to find horses that can deliver performances the Amir would be proud of. Whether Tumbarumba wins or not, we hope he competes strongly and shows his heart.”
Wathnan’s presence in Dubai extends beyond the World Cup. Make Me King tackles the Dubai Turf, Lazzat lines up in the Al Quoz Sprint, and the Godolphin Mile features Generous Tipper, Hypnus, and David Of Athens, reflecting a broad and ambitious campaign.
Tumbarumba’s challenge over 2000 metres will be closely watched, offering a compelling test of stamina and class. If he can carry his recent progress forward, the gelding could make a memorable impression on the world stage and cement his place among the leading stars of the 2026 Dubai Carnival.
