Tom Cannon first Grade One success came at Sandown Park in December 2021, and the jockey’s breakthrough moment remained a defining point in his career as he recalled the occasion this week. Speaking ahead of the track’s forthcoming anniversary celebrations, Cannon reflected on the day he guided Edwardstone to victory in the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase.

The landmark performance occurred on 4 December 2021, when Cannon steered the Alan King-trained gelding to a decisive win at his local track. It marked the beginning of a memorable campaign for the partnership, which later delivered the Arkle Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham.

Cannon remembered the day vividly. He said the win provided a sense of relief as much as celebration, describing it as a milestone he had long hoped to achieve. Sandown Park, based just a short distance from his home in Shalford, added a personal element to the achievement.

The jockey explained that the path into that Grade One was not straightforward. Edwardstone had been brought down on seasonal debut at Warwick before winning on his return there. With limited options available at the time, connections made the decision to send him to Sandown, a move that proved inspired as the gelding handled the track with fluency.

Cannon recalled a smooth round with only minor errors, noting a slight moment at a downhill fence and a nudge at one of the Railway fences. However, Edwardstone travelled strongly throughout and delivered a commanding performance.

A year later, they returned to Sandown for another standout win in the 2022 Tingle Creek Chase, a display Cannon described as one of the horse’s finest. The rider highlighted the pride of having his name permanently listed on Sandown’s honours board, something that remains significant for his family and local supporters.

The jockey also reflected on Sandown Park’s place within the sport, noting that while the area may not be considered a traditional Jump racing stronghold, the course retains strong regional and national importance. For Cannon, winning two major races there enhanced his connection to the track.

As Sandown Park marks its 150th year in 2025, the venue plans a series of community initiatives culminating in an invitation for 150 people and horses who have shaped its history to attend the Betfair Tingle Creek. The list will include racing figures and community members connected to the course’s legacy.
