Saturday’s meeting at Thirsk Racecourse produced an entertaining afternoon of flat racing as emerging talents and experienced campaigners delivered strong performances across the eight-race card on 16 May.
The action began with the Marion Gibson Brown Memorial Irish EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies’ Stakes over five furlongs. Dee’s Funny Girl (IRE), ridden confidently by Jason Hart, showed excellent pace and composure to secure victory in the Class 4 contest. The filly handled the sprint trip impressively and gave connections an encouraging success in the opening race of the afternoon.
The second division of the same maiden event also showcased promising young talent as Kodi Bear Light (IRE) produced a determined performance under Jack Nicholls. The youngster travelled strongly throughout the five-furlong trip before finishing best to claim victory and provide another exciting result for connections.
The 3:00 PM Handicap Stakes over one mile and four furlongs saw Caraway emerge victorious in a competitive staying contest. Guided by Darragh Keenan, Caraway displayed stamina and consistency to finish strongly in the closing stages. The performance highlighted the horse’s ability over middle-distance trips and added another notable success to the afternoon’s proceedings.
Sprint specialists then took centre stage in the 3:37 PM Handicap Stakes. Right And Exact, partnered by Daniel Tudhope, produced a sharp display over five furlongs. Breaking smartly and maintaining momentum throughout, the runner showed plenty of determination to hold off challengers in the closing moments of the race.
The 4:12 PM Handicap Stakes featured a competitive field over a mile, with Military Leader proving strongest under Sam James. The winner travelled comfortably before quickening effectively inside the final furlong to secure a well-deserved victory in the Class 5 event.
One of the standout performances of the day arrived in the 4:47 PM Class 3 Handicap Stakes, where Empire of Light (IRE) delivered an eye-catching effort. Ridden by Oliver Stammers, the runner displayed excellent tactical speed and composure to capture the contest over a mile. The victory reflected both the horse’s quality and a polished ride from the jockey.
The penultimate race of the afternoon, the 5:25 PM Handicap Stakes over seven furlongs, saw Brighton Boy (IRE) claim top honours with a polished performance. David Allan guided the winner expertly through the race, timing the challenge to perfection before stretching clear in the closing stages.
The meeting concluded with the 5:57 PM Handicap Stakes over six furlongs, where Run This Way secured victory under Paul Mulrennan. The horse produced a determined finish to round off the day’s action on a high note and brought the curtain down on another successful fixture at Thirsk.
Across the card, spectators witnessed a mixture of emerging talent, experienced runners, and polished jockey performances, making the Saturday meeting an enjoyable showcase of competitive flat racing in North Yorkshire.
