At Gulfstream Park on Saturday morning, The Puma returned to the track with a steady half-mile workout, sharpening his preparation for the upcoming Kentucky Derby. The son of Essential Quality moved smoothly through a maintenance-style breeze, signalling a continuation of his carefully managed build-up following a demanding effort in late March.

The Puma Kentucky Derby preparation

Trainer Gustavo Delgado’s assistant, Gustavo Delgado Jr., described the exercise as a routine move rather than a searching test. The colt covered the half-mile in 52.32 seconds, his first official workout since finishing a narrow second in the Curlin Florida Derby (G1). The emphasis, according to connections, was on rhythm and recovery rather than speed.

“It was about getting him back into his routine two weeks after a race. It was pretty easy work,” Delgado Jr. explained. “Next week is when he’ll have his important breeze, likely on Friday or Saturday.”

That Florida Derby effort remains a key reference point. The Puma endured a less-than-ideal start, was forced to race wide around the turn, and still produced a sweeping challenge to take the lead entering the stretch. He was only denied in the final stride by Commandment, a performance that underscored both resilience and untapped potential.

Connections are now following a familiar path that yielded success in the past. Delgado Sr. trained Mage, who also finished second in the Florida Derby before going on to claim Kentucky Derby honours in 2023. The parallels are not lost on the stable.

“The pattern is very similar,” Delgado Jr. noted. “We’ll likely ship him to Churchill Downs next weekend, breeze there the following week, and keep everything consistent with what has worked before. Both horses have similarities in their running style and what they need.”

The Puma’s profile has developed rapidly in a short span. After breaking his maiden in determined fashion, he announced himself with a strong victory in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) on March 7, rallying from off the pace with authority. His Florida Derby run, though resulting in defeat, arguably elevated his standing further, highlighting his ability to sustain a long drive under pressure.

With just four career starts behind him, there remains a sense that his ceiling has yet to be reached. The Delgados believe that the experience gained in top-level company will prove invaluable as he approaches the first Saturday in May.

“We had a really nice prep,” Delgado Jr. said. “A race like the Florida Derby gives you confidence. It has consistently been one of the strongest lead-ups to the Kentucky Derby, and performances there tell you a lot about your horse.”

The Puma is expected to ship to Churchill Downs shortly after his next major workout, where final preparations will be completed on-site. If his progression continues along the current trajectory, he will arrive at the Derby with both form and foundation in place.
