The most prestigious race of Indian horse racing, the HPSL Indian Derby is not so far away. To be held on 2nd February 2025, this race, as always, is much awaited for by the sports enthusiasts. What makes this race so renowned among all the other races is the highest stakes it offers as well as the presence of various prominent personalities such as bollywood stars, business moguls and other celebrities. This race is not just an ultimate frontier for the Indian thoroughbred and a  platform for the top trainers/jockeys showing off their skills but also an extravaganza of glamour, style, fashion and show-bizz.

Since its first running in 1943, The Indian Derby has been a significant part of Indian horse racing. The inaugural running of this race was won by filly Princess Beautiful, ridden by Edgar Britt. At that time, Princess filly grabbed herself a winning prize of Rs. 35,000.

The Indian Derby is also the second leg of the Indian Triple Crown including the other two prestigious classics The Indian 2000 Guineas and The Indian St. Ledger. The horse that manages to win all of these three races, is awarded with the Indian Triple Crown. The holds a northworthy distinction, since winning the Indian Triple Crown is a rare feat that secures the horse’s place in racing history, elevating both the horse and its trainer to legendary status.

The Indian Derby is only open to 4 year old horses to run over a distance of 2400 mts. It is a grade 1 race which means it involves the top horses and jockeys of the year. The last Derby race in India, which took place on 4th February, 2024 was won by colt Enabler, trained by Malesh Narredu and ridden by Yash Narredu. Enablers’s remarkable performance allowed him to clinch the winning prize of Rs. 120,00,000. Colt Synthesis crossed the finishing line securing second position, followed by filly Jamari securing third.

The race, soon to be held in February 2025, will bring a wave of excitement and an atmosphere filled with thrill as the crowd eagerly awaits the crowning of the champion and the winning of the highest stakes.
