The Fusebox Handicap Win for Galway Girl at Calcutta Races
The second contest of the Calcutta Races’ Monsoon Meeting third day brought a different flavour to the afternoon, with the 1,600-metre The Fusebox Handicap attracting a strong mid-tier field of horses rated 21–46. With a purse of ₹4,00,000 on offer, the race promised a sharp tactical battle on the monsoon-tempered surface.
Galway Girl, carrying the confidence of a well-prepared yard, settled beautifully under Vishal Bunde for trainer N Darashah. Patiently held in the early stages, she surged forward turning for home, producing an authoritative run to the line to win in 1:40.547.
The horse is owned in partnership by Mr. Enrico Piperno, Mr. Anand Chopra rep. Ms. Speedex Livestock Pvt Ltd, Mr. Rajesh Kabra, Mr. Ashok Kumar Agarwal, Mr. Biswajit Sinha Roy, Mr. Vivek Choudhary, Mr. S. K. Shingal, Mr. Rahul Sawhny, Mr. Sharat Jhunjhunwala, Mr. Lalit Baid, a diverse ownership group united in their delight at the performance.
Runner-up honours went to Zambezi, guided by Varun for trainer Vikash J, who posted a time of 1:41.670 after a spirited challenge in the straight. Annette, under R Vaibhav for Aashay Doctor, stayed on well to claim third in 1:41.833, rounding off a competitive finish.
With The Fusebox Handicap settled, anticipation now shifts to The Brighter Future Plate, where a fresh set of contenders will look to make their own mark on the day’s programme.
