Team Hesslink Williams Clinch Title at Inaugural Baran Global Hunter Classic in Valkenswaard
The debut edition of the Baran Global Hunter Classic concluded in spectacular style at the Longines Tops International Arena, leaving an indelible mark on the global equestrian calendar. A weekend infused with elegance, excitement, and innovation saw the traditional grace of hunter sport blended seamlessly with the energy of elite team competition.
Set against the backdrop of the prestigious Valkenswaard venue, the event introduced a unique format, bringing together seven teams each featuring a professional hunter rider, a junior or amateur, and a 5* international show jumper. This dynamic mix offered audiences thrilling moments over three days of competition, with Sunday’s Handy Hunter class proving decisive. Riders had to demonstrate flair, agility, and control across a technically demanding course that accounted for half the final score.
Team Hesslink Williams emerged as the undisputed champions, showcasing unwavering composure and finesse throughout. With a final team score of 182.83, the trio of Geoffrey Hesslink, Faith Schuttemeyer, and Lillie Keenan delivered standout performances across all stages. Schuttemeyer, in particular, earned individual accolades by topping the Handy Hunter round aboard Juan Carlos, reinforcing her team’s dominant position.
Close behind, Team French secured second place with 178.17 points. John French and Paige Walkenbach combined their hunter expertise with the versatility of Dutch show jumping legend Harrie Smolders, who impressed in his hunter debut by contributing scores to the overall tally—an achievement highlighting his adaptability in the saddle.
Completing the podium, Team California Rose—featuring Halie Robinson, Caroline Ingalls, and Maikel van der Vleuten—maintained their overnight third-place ranking with a total of 171.83 points. The top three positions remained unchanged from Saturday, underscoring the consistency of these teams across all rounds.
The competition also recognized standout individuals in each division. Geoffrey Hesslink partnered with Paisley Park to take top honors among professionals, while Schuttemeyer and Juan Carlos led the junior/amateur division. Harrie Smolders was named best 5* jumper on Ever So Often, a remarkable achievement for a hunter newcomer.
The full leaderboard saw Team Esau Williams finishing fourth (170.33), followed by Team Artemis (162.67), Team Mill Creek (157.67), and Team Finally Farm (122.67). Individual Handy Hunter results included second place for Paige Walkenbach on Babylon and third for Emily Esau Williams riding Star Quality.
More than just a competition, the Baran Global Hunter Classic was a full-spectrum event for the whole family. Visitors enjoyed not only world-class sport but also hospitality experiences, retail therapy, and engaging entertainment. The vibrant atmosphere made it clear that this was more than a horse show—it was a celebration of equestrian culture and lifestyle.
As the sun set on this inaugural edition, the Baran Global Hunter Classic firmly established itself as a pioneering addition to the global show calendar—fusing tradition, modernity, and sport in a way that few events have managed to achieve.
