Newmarket’s new Flat season began in encouraging fashion on Tuesday as Talk Of New York advertised his Classic credentials with a polished success in the Federation Of Bloodstock Agents EBF Conditions Stakes over seven furlongs, giving Charlie Appleby another serious contender for next month’s 2000 Guineas.
The colt had created a striking impression when winning on debut at Kempton Park last autumn, but his winter campaign in Dubai proved less straightforward, where he finished third in the Jumeirah 2000 Guineas after racing keenly and never quite settling into rhythm.
Back on home soil, however, there was a different feel entirely. Fitted with a hood for the first time, the son of Wootton Bassett travelled with greater composure throughout before moving smoothly into contention. Once asked to lengthen entering the final furlong, he quickly settled the race and pulled three lengths clear of Lost Signal.
It was the manner of the performance as much as the margin that caught the eye. He travelled like a colt with abundant ability, then found generously when required, suggesting both maturity and class have begun to come together at the right time.
Appleby was pleased not only with the victory, but with the colt’s attitude and progress since returning from the Middle East.
He said Talk Of New York remains a work in progress, but one with considerable talent, adding that the decision to apply a hood and drop back to seven furlongs had helped the horse relax and use his energy more effectively.
The trainer also indicated the colt remains firmly in the 2000 Guineas picture, though final plans will be shaped after the remainder of the Newmarket meeting and the performances of other stable contenders.
Appleby explained that conditions in Dubai had not suited the horse, describing him as far more straightforward since returning to Britain and resuming his usual routine. That improvement, he suggested, had been visible both at home and on the racecourse.
Winning rider William Buick echoed that view, describing the contest as an ideal learning experience for both horse and connections.
He noted the strong gallop ensured it was a proper test rather than a tactical affair, allowing runners to show their true level. Buick added that Talk Of New York had benefitted from the run, with greater fitness, experience and racecraft now beginning to show.
For Newmarket racegoers, it was an early-season performance rich in promise. For the Classic generation, it was another sign that the 2000 Guineas picture is beginning to take shape. And for Talk Of New York, it may prove the afternoon when potential turned into genuine expectation.
Talk Of New York now heads towards the spring showpiece with momentum, and if he builds again on this display, his name will feature prominently in every serious Newmarket Classic preview.
