The embrace said it all. As Nicola Philippaerts dismounted, his brother Olivier threw an arm around him, relief and joy written across both faces. Under the golden late-summer light of Manhattan, the Stockholm Hearts finally found the victory they had been chasing all season, storming to a dramatic win in the GCL New York at Liberty State Park.
Behind them, the Hudson shimmered and the Statue of Liberty stood watch as a packed crowd, sprinkled with celebrities like Bruce Springsteen and team owner Georgina Bloomberg, erupted into applause. “It’s been a while,” Olivier admitted with a smile. “It’s been a bit of a difficult season, but we’ve been working towards this.” Nicola, still flushed from the effort, gestured towards the skyline: “The view is fantastic. To be able to ride in this city is incredibly special.”
A Heart-Stopping Finish
The tension had been simmering all afternoon. From the outset, the GCL’s 12th stage delivered everything the series promises — world-class horses, tactical battles, and the kind of pressure that cracks even the steadiest hands. After Round 1, Stockholm Hearts, Madrid in Motion, and Riesenbeck International all sat level on clean slates, while Prague Lions lurked on a single time fault.
But as Round 2 unfolded, mistakes reshaped the leaderboard. Championship leaders Valkenswaard United endured a bruising afternoon, Marcus Ehning’s 16 penalties in Round 1 followed by another eight in Round 2 proving too costly. Even Gilles Thomas’ double clear couldn’t repair the damage. The home side, New York Empire, suffered a similar fate — Trevor Breen’s two rails with Highland President dashed their hopes of a fairytale win, despite a lightning-fast clear from Scott Brash aboard Chadora Lady.
When the dust settled, Riesenbeck International thrilled their supporters with Marco Kutscher’s flawless round, only to falter late with two rails down from Maximilian Weishaupt. Madrid in Motion then edged into the podium places with typical grit, a sharp clear from Manuel Fernandez Saro securing second overall.
That left the arena to the Philippaerts brothers. Olivier’s single rail tightened the screws, leaving Nicola to deliver perfection — and deliver he did, piloting his mount through the towering fences to seal Stockholm Hearts’ first victory of 2025.
Championship Picture
The win couldn’t have come at a better time for the Swedish outfit. With the GCL season hurtling towards its climax, every point is precious. Valkenswaard United still cling to the lead on 240, but Cannes Stars are just six points behind on 234. Shanghai Swans remain in striking distance on 218, while Prague Lions (200) and a resurgent Riesenbeck International (190) are both pressing hard.
For the Hearts, who had endured a season of near-misses, New York marked a turning point. “Getting the win here gives us confidence,” Olivier said. “Now it’s about momentum as we head to Prague.”
Next Stop: Vienna
As the lights of Manhattan flickered across the Hudson, Liberty State Park etched its place in GCL history — a brand-new venue, a breathtaking backdrop, and a victory that will be remembered. The circuit now heads to Vienna, where Schönbrunn Palace will host Stage 13 from 26–28 September. If New York was proof of anything, it’s that the battle for the championship crown remains wide open.
