Just a month after his dramatic victory in the Kentucky Derby, Sovereignty secured another major triumph by winning the Belmont Stakes. Trainer William I. Mott once again demonstrated his exceptional horsemanship, prioritizing the horse’s well-being—an approach that delivered a brilliant outcome. With this victory, Sovereignty now claims two of the three coveted legs in the American Triple Crown series.
The Triple Crown includes the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. Traditionally held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, the Belmont Stakes has temporarily moved to Saratoga Race Course due to ongoing construction. In this prestigious 157th running of the Belmont Stakes, presented by NYRA, Sovereignty, already crowned Derby champion, soared to victory once more.
Guided by jockey Junior Alvarado and trained by Hall of Famer William I. Mott, Sovereignty is proudly owned by racing powerhouse Godolphin, LLC. The colt’s performance in this iconic race solidifies his status as a top contender in modern Thoroughbred racing.
The Belmont Stakes, the third and final leg of the Triple Crown, was held on June 7th, 2025. It featured a 14-race card, including six high-stakes races. The $2,000,000 Belmont Stakes was the highlight, run over a 1¼-mile dirt track at 7:04 PM. The competitive field included eight runners: Hill Road, Sovereignty, Rodriguez, Uncaged, Crudo, Baeza, Journalism, and Heart of Honor.
In an electrifying finish, Sovereignty outpaced Journalism—the Preakness Stakes winner—to capture the title. As the dust settled, it was Sovereignty’s name that echoed in the grandstand. With two Triple Crown victories now under his belt, racing fans are eagerly anticipating which contender will achieve the ultimate title of Triple Crown winner.
