Southwell will stage a nine-race Flat all-weather meeting on Thursday, 17 September 2026. The programme will begin at 4:20pm and continue until 8:30pm, with races covering distances from 4f 215y to 2m 103y. The card will feature contests for two-year-olds, three-year-olds and older horses, with prize money ranging from £6,200 to £10,000.
The meeting will begin at 4:20pm with the Class 6 Nursery Handicap Stakes, which will be contested by two-year-olds over 6f 17y. The race will carry £6,200 in prize money and will be for horses rated between 0 and 65. The opening contest will provide the young runners with another opportunity to gain experience over the Southwell all-weather course.
At 4:50pm, the Class 6 Handicap Stakes will bring three-year-olds and older horses together over 6f 17y. The race will offer £6,200 and will be restricted to horses rated 46-65. The six-furlong distance will provide a test of early pace and consistency, with the runners required to maintain their speed throughout the contest.
The 5:25pm Handicap Stakes will be one of the longer events on the card. The Class 4 race will cover 2m 103y for three-year-olds and older horses and will carry £9,000 in prize money. The field will be restricted to horses rated 66-85. The extended distance will place greater emphasis on stamina and the ability to maintain a steady rhythm over the all-weather surface.
Race four at 6:00pm will be the first division of the EBF Restricted Novice Stakes, a Class 4 contest for two-year-olds. The race will be run over 7f 15y and will carry £10,000 in prize money. It will be open to horses in Bands C and D and will also serve as an EBF Restricted Race Qualifier. The seven-furlong trip will give the inexperienced runners an opportunity to demonstrate their development.
The second division of the EBF Restricted Novice Stakes will follow at 6:30pm. Like the first division, the Class 4 contest will be for two-year-olds and will take place over 7f 15y. The race will offer £10,000 in prize money and will be restricted to horses from Bands C and D. The two divisions will form an important part of the evening’s programme for the younger horses.
At 7:00pm, the Class 4 Handicap Stakes will be contested by three-year-olds over 1m 14y. The race will carry £9,000 in prize money and will be restricted to horses rated 61-80. The mile-distance event will provide a different test from the shorter races earlier in the evening, requiring the runners to settle into a suitable pace before producing their finishing effort.
The 7:30pm Class 6 Handicap Stakes will be open to three-year-olds and older horses. It will cover 1m 14y and will carry £6,200 in prize money. Eligible runners will be rated between 46 and 65. The mile trip should provide a balanced test of pace and stamina as the field competes around the Southwell all-weather track.
At 8:00pm, the Class 6 Handicap Stakes will be staged over 4f 215y for three-year-olds and older horses. The race will carry £6,200 and will be restricted to horses rated 46-55. The shorter distance will make this one of the quickest contests on the card, with the runners required to establish a strong position early in the race.
The final contest at 8:30pm will be the Novice Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Stakes, a Class 6 race for four-year-olds and older horses. The event will be run over 1m 3f 24y and will carry £6,200 in prize money for horses rated 46-60. It will be restricted to amateur riders who had ridden three winners or fewer at the start of the season.
The nine-runner field includes Palazzo Persico, Golspie, Glitter Code, Cougar, Spec of Light, Power of Prayer, Cavalry Call, Wrist Art and The Pug. Palazzo Persico is rated 60 and arrives after a recent victory, while Golspie is also rated 60 and has recorded several placed efforts in recent starts. Glitter Code is rated 58 and comes into the contest following a win.
Cougar carries a BHA rating of 56, while Spec of Light is rated 54. Power of Prayer has a rating of 52, with Cavalry Call and Wrist Art both rated 50. The Pug, who has previous course-and-distance form, is rated 46 and will carry the lowest weight in the field. The combination of the longer distance and amateur-rider conditions will bring the nine-race programme to a close.
The Southwell all-weather meeting on 17 September 2026 will feature nine races across sprint, mile and staying distances. The programme will include Class 4, Class 6 and novice events, with prize money ranging from £6,200 to £10,000. Two-year-olds will feature in the two EBF restricted novice races, while the final contest will provide a longer-distance challenge for older horses and amateur riders.
