This year’s edition supported The King’s Trust International and its Project Lehar, an initiative focused on girls’ education, vocational training, and gender equality across Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in India. The cause resonated deeply with the race’s participants and supporters, including Sophie Forsyth, who rode with purpose and poise.
Sophie Forsyth: From Underwriter to Winning Rider
Riding under the Markel banner, Forsyth partnered with the seasoned campaigner Woodcote Girl, better known in racing circles as Treacherous, an 11-year-old gelding. The duo executed their plan to perfection.
“It is unbelievable. I have dreamed of this, but it is absolutely incredible,” said Forsyth after her stirring win. “I am 29, turning 30 this month, and this is the best day of my life!”
Her race strategy was clear: “We wanted a good start, but then to settle in and push from two furlongs out. I was in full concentration mode from the start, ‘what’s the next step, don’t do anything wrong’ but I’m exhausted now.”
The crowd, filled with her colleagues and loved ones, erupted in celebration. “Goodwood was really generous with the tickets, and a lot of people from Markel are here. I feel very lucky,” she added.
Trainer’s Touch: Ed de Giles on Preparing a Charity Winner
Trainer Ed de Giles, who prepared the horse for the race, revealed that the planning began early in the year. “There’s a connection between Markel and the owner, his son is one of Sophie’s clients,” said de Giles. “Treacherous is an easy ride who knows his job, although he can idle in front.”
The veteran had recently finished a commendable sixth at York in the Jump Jockeys’ Nunthorpe, and Forsyth’s hands-on approach in the build-up made all the difference. “She rode him most days last week. Sophie rode him brilliantly today,” he praised.
Lois Logan’s Debut: A Showjumper’s First Racing Challenge
Among other riders was Lois Logan, daughter of broadcaster Gabby Logan and former Scotland rugby union captain Kenny Logan. She partnered Spirit of Ecstasy, finishing midfield but full of spirit.
“It was over so quickly and such a thrill. The horse put up a strong fight against quality opposition,” said Lois. “I had to push from the third furlong as the race was fast from the gate. It’s given me more confidence and I’m less afraid of speed now.”
Gabby Logan, beaming with pride, said, “It’s harder to watch than rugby! All those 4:40 a.m. starts and months of training have paid off. She’s loved every bit of it.”
Lois had spent her university break riding out at Andrew Balding’s Kingsclere stable, adapting from her showjumping background to flat racing. “She’ll definitely go again if they need her,” Gabby added.
With Sophie Forsyth leading the way, the 2025 Markel Magnolia Cup was more than a race—it was a celebration of grit, grace, and the unifying power of sport for social change.
