Tomasello secured the biggest victory of his career in the Singspiel Stakes 2026, prevailing by half a length in Saturday’s $175,000 HPIbet Singspiel Stakes (Grade 3) at Woodbine. The four-year-old bay colt returned from a break and delivered a determined performance under Emma-Jayne Wilson to claim his first graded stakes triumph.
Making his first start since early July and racing for the first time with Wilson aboard, Tomasello broke smoothly from post four as 10 runners set out over 1⅜ miles on Woodbine’s E.P. Taylor Turf Course. The course was rated good for the contest.
Tomasello showed useful early pace before settling into third along the rail. Chiefswood Stables Limited runners Coburg and English Actor disputed the lead, with the latter arriving off a recent Niagara Stakes victory. Side Street raced fourth, while Mesero occupied fifth ahead of Dancin in Da’Nile, Magna Time, Jokestar, Junipero Serra and Swift Delivery.
Coburg and English Actor continued to control the early stages, with Wilson keeping Tomasello within close range. The opening quarter-mile was covered in 24.82 seconds, followed by a half-mile in 49.96 seconds and six furlongs in 1:14.29.
As the field passed the one-mile marker in 1:38.65, Wilson moved Tomasello into the three path and began to build momentum. The Mark Casse-trained colt was asked for his full effort inside the three-sixteenths pole, where he launched his challenge for the lead.
Side Street quickened on the outside, while Dancin in Da’Nile found room along the inside. Tomasello nevertheless maintained his advantage through the final stages and held on to defeat Dancin in Da’Nile by half a length. Side Street finished third, with Mesero fourth.
The winning time for the 11-furlong journey was 2:16.67.
Singspiel Stakes 2026 Victory Rewarded Tomasello’s Turf Form
Wilson’s victory added another notable achievement to her association with the Singspiel Stakes. She had previously won the race in 2022 aboard Ready for the Lady, trained by Roger Attfield.
The rider’s preparation for Tomasello’s return included reviewing several of his previous performances. That homework proved useful as she settled the colt into a comfortable rhythm before gradually moving him into contention.
Tomasello had already demonstrated a strong aptitude for turf before his Singspiel Stakes 2026 success. Bred in Kentucky by Barry and Judith Becker, he broke his maiden on the grass at Keeneland in his fifth career start, leading a field of 12 by three lengths under Jose Ortiz.
He followed that victory with a 1½-length success in the nine-furlong Kentucky Downs Preview Nashville Derby in August 2025. Tomasello subsequently finished second in the Grade 3 Nashville Derby Invitational before finishing last of 12 in his next appearance.
After a freshening, the son of Authentic returned to action and recorded a handicap victory over Gulfstream Park’s all-weather course with Javier Castellano aboard. He later finished eighth in the Soldier’s Dancer Handicap before making his Woodbine debut.
His preparation for the Canadian assignment had included three consecutive strong workouts over Woodbine’s main track. The sharpest of those came on August 26, when Tomasello covered five furlongs in 59.80 seconds.
The Singspiel Stakes victory improved Tomasello’s career record to five wins, two seconds and two thirds from 12 starts. It also represented his fourth victory from eight starts on turf, further strengthening his record over the surface.
Dancin in Da’Nile finished second in the Singspiel Stakes, followed by Side Street in third and Mesero in fourth.
