Sha Tin Sunday racing preview

The twilight meeting at Sha Tin on Sunday evening brings together a compelling mix of emerging talent and proven performers, with attention firmly fixed on Francis Lui’s progressive three-year-old Hot Delight as he lines up again under the guidance of Vincent Ho in the Class 2 feature over 1200 metres.

Hot Delight enters this assignment having made an immediate impression this season, quickly establishing himself as one of the most talked-about youngsters in training.

The three-year-old son of Too Darn Hot has already strung together three victories from his first three starts, showcasing both speed and composure beyond his years. Trainer Francis Lui, who previously guided the legendary Golden Sixty through the ranks, has been measured but optimistic about the colt’s development, hinting at a horse still learning his craft while holding significant potential for further progress.

Ho’s association with Hot Delight resumes after a narrow weight issue prevented him from partnering the gelding in Class 2 company last time out, when Harry Bentley took the ride. That outing on 9 May saw the three-year-old finish fourth, just over a length behind subsequent Group 3 winner Patch Of Stars, a performance that reinforced his ability to compete at a higher level without yet securing victory in the grade.

Vincent Ho has remained encouraged by the colt’s attitude and upward trajectory, suggesting the best may still lie ahead as he matures through the season and into his four-year-old campaign.

“He’s shown plenty in his first few runs and still feels like there is improvement in him,” Ho said. “He’s only three, and we expect him to keep strengthening over the summer and into next season.”

The Class 2 contest brings together a deep and competitive field, with Hot Delight carrying 119lb as the only three-year-old in the line-up. Among the more seasoned rivals is Rising Force, trained by Ricky Yiu, who has been remarkably consistent with eight top-two finishes from nine starts. Group 3 winner Storm Rider adds further depth to the contest, while Victor The Winner, a former G1 Centenary Sprint Cup hero, returns under champion jockey Zac Purton following a confidence-boosting recent success after a long winless stretch.

From a tactical standpoint, Ho will break from barrier 10, a draw he views as workable rather than prohibitive, with the priority on securing a smooth early position.

“It’s not ideal, but it’s manageable,” Ho said. “If he can settle in comfortably and find cover, he should be able to finish off well like he has before.”

Elsewhere on the card, Mega Mastermind offers another intriguing angle in the developmental three-year-old ranks as trainer Jamie Richards looks to steady the gelding following a below-par run over 1650 metres at Happy Valley last month.

Richards, however, remains confident the Deep Field gelding can rebound after a confidence-building trial at Conghua, where the horse showed encouraging signs of returning to form.

“It wasn’t his best effort last time, but we’ve reset and given him an easier preparation since,” Richards said. “He’s in good order heading into this, and we’re hopeful of a better showing.”

Mega Mastermind, to be ridden by Zac Purton, has been handed 132lb in the Class 4 HKU Heritage Handicap over 1600 metres, a course and distance where he has already demonstrated consistent form this season with a win, a second and a third from three attempts. A wide draw of 13 presents an added challenge, though connections are optimistic that early positioning could prove decisive.

The 11-race programme, part of the Summer Series, gets underway at 4pm with a competitive opener over 1800 metres, setting the tone for an evening that blends rising prospects with established performers across the Sha Tin card.
