The action-packed programme at Sha Tin saw top-class performances across multiple distances, with competitive fields producing several close finishes and notable milestones for both horses and connections.

The HK$4.2 million G3 Lion Rock Trophy Handicap (1600m) proved the feature attraction, where Light Years Charm (124lb) provided a breakthrough moment for trainer David Eustace and jockey Jerry Chau. In one of the season’s most compelling finales, the gelding prevailed by a short head over Beauty Joy (125lb), with Copartner Prance (135lb) only a nose further back in third, stopping the clock in 1m 33.58s. Sky Jewellery and Winning Ovation were also tightly bunched just behind, underlining the depth of the contest.

Settled early in fourth, Light Years Charm travelled comfortably behind the leaders before Chau guided him through along the inside rail turning for home. The pair struck the front inside the final 200 metres and, despite sustained pressure from multiple challengers, held firm in the closing strides.

The victory marked a significant rise for a horse who arrived in Hong Kong rated 64 and has now progressed to a mark of 100, with six wins from 18 starts and earnings exceeding HK$13.8 million.

Trainer David Eustace, who previously enjoyed Group 1 success in Australia, spoke with clear satisfaction after landing what he described as a major career moment in Hong Kong racing.

“He’s just been a great horse and has worked through his grades really well,” he said. “Everything went his way, and Jerry gave him a beautiful ride.”

Jockey Chau echoed those sentiments, highlighting the importance of conserving ground and timing the run perfectly in a race that unfolded tactically.

Elsewhere on the card, Patch Of Stars (121lb) continued his strong seasonal form with victory in the G3 Sha Tin Vase Handicap (1200m). Ridden by Karis Teetan for trainer Manfred Man, the four-year-old held off Raging Blizzard (135lb) by a short head, with Tomodachi Kokoroe finishing third in 1m 07.94s.

Fractious before the start, Patch Of Stars overcame early unruliness to settle midfield before producing a decisive late surge, securing his fourth course-and-distance win of the campaign.

In the supporting races, David Hall and jockey Jerry Chau combined successfully with Ka Ying Attack (127lb) in the Class 3 Hong Kong Ka Ying (Meizhou) General Chamber Of Commerce Cup Handicap (1200m), further enhancing Chau’s strong season tally.

Chau’s double placed him firmly in contention for the Tony Cruz Award, as he moved to 41 wins for the season and opened a 10-win advantage over his nearest rival with 12 meetings remaining.

Trainer Caspar Fownes made a strong statement in the championship race with a double of his own. Papaya Brose (135lb) struck under João Moreira in the Class 4 Federation Of Associations Of Native Hing Ning Residents In Hong Kong Cup Handicap (1200m), before Family Jewel (122lb) followed up in the Class 3 General Association Of Hong Kong Heyuan Societies Cup Handicap (1600m).

Fownes now leads the trainers’ standings with 58 wins, narrowly ahead of Danny Shum on 56 and Mark Newnham on 55, ensuring a tightly contested title battle as the season progresses.

Newnham also featured among the winners, scoring with Oldtown (126lb) under Zac Purton in the Class 4 Hong Kong Federation Of Guangzhou Associations Cup Handicap (1200m), while debutant Joyful Joy impressed in the Class 4 Federation Of Qing Yuan Associations (Hong Kong) Cup Handicap (1400m) under James Orman.

One of the most eye-catching performances of the day came from Ka Ying Lightning (127lb), who delivered a commanding debut win for David Hall and Andrea Atzeni in the Class 4 Hong Kong Mei Zhou Association Cup Handicap (1000m). The three-year-old responded well after a slow start to win decisively, confirming early expectations of ability.

Hall praised the colt’s potential while noting his gradual education through multiple trials leading into the race.

Atzeni also enjoyed success later on the card, steering Aeroinvincible (122lb) to victory in the Class 3 Hakka Cup Handicap (1400m), adding further depth to a productive afternoon for international riders.

Hong Kong racing now turns its attention to Happy Valley on Wednesday night (3 June), where another competitive programme is expected.

Sha Tin race results remained the central talking point of the day, with tight finishes and rising stars reinforcing the depth and quality of the Hong Kong circuit.
