The closing stages of the racing season at Sha Tin often bring clarity to emerging talent, and Sunday’s programme promises exactly that as two Group 3 contests bring progressive four-year-olds into sharper focus. With form lines tightening and ratings at career highs, the stage is set for a compelling afternoon featuring Sky Jewellery and Patch Of Stars stepping into deeper waters for the first time at this level.

Sha Tin Group 3 preview

With the season nearing its conclusion, the Sha Tin Group 3 preview centres on two upwardly mobile gallopers who arrive with momentum and unanswered questions about how far they can climb.

John Size’s Sky Jewellery has been one of the standout improvers of the campaign, returning from a 12-month layoff in April to quickly land two victories that have propelled him to a mark of 95. The Autumn Sun gelding has shown notable versatility, winning from 1200m through to a mile on varying ground conditions, suggesting a horse with both tactical speed and staying strength.

Andrea Atzeni continues his association aboard Sky Jewellery, carrying 119lb in the G3 Lion Rock Trophy Handicap (1600m), following a smooth partnership forged in a recent Class 2 success over the mile.

“He’s done nothing wrong so far,” Atzeni said. “He’s won his last two races, and he’s up in grade, with the lightish weight. He’s a nice horse, and we’ll find out a little bit more on Sunday.”

Conditions remain a talking point, but connections are confident in his adaptability. “He’s pretty versatile… I don’t think the ground would be an issue,” Atzeni added, reflecting on a run where the colt settled before finishing strongly once balanced.

The rider also renews his successful link with trainer John Size, a partnership that has already delivered consistent results throughout the season.

The Sha Tin Group 3 preview also features Patch Of Stars, a lightly weighted contender who has steadily progressed through the ranks for Manfred Man. The All Too Hard gelding will carry 121lb in the G3 Sha Tin Vase Handicap (1200m), entering with three wins, a second and a third from seven starts this term.

His form trajectory has been notable, climbing from a rating of 79 earlier in the season as he has developed into a more consistent and confident sprinter. However, Sunday’s assignment brings him face-to-face with seasoned rivals including Raging Blizzard, Beauty Waves and Tomodachi Kokoroe, all proven at this level.

Karis Teetan, who takes over in the saddle, is optimistic about the timing of the challenge.

“At the end of the season, you get those horses that are still holding their form, and they go in with the nice lightweight. Those are the ones to get on,” he said. “It’s a tough race, but he’s in the right place to be competitive.”

Sunday’s 11-race fixture at Sha Tin begins at 12.45pm with the Hong Kong Wu Hua General Association Cup Plate (1200m) for Griffins, setting the tone for a competitive afternoon before the feature contests take centre stage.

As the Sha Tin Group 3 preview suggests, this is a meeting defined not just by established names, but by emerging contenders looking to define their place in the hierarchy before the season closes.
