The Hong Kong racing season reaches one of its defining staying contests this Sunday as anticipation builds around the HK$13 million Group 1 Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2400m) at Sha Tin. With the spotlight firmly fixed on the home star, the race has drawn global attention for its depth, class, and international flavour.

All eyes will naturally be on Romantic Warrior, who arrives as the overwhelming favourite and the standout figure in Hong Kong racing. His presence alone elevates the contest, but the opposition brings genuine intrigue, particularly with two experienced international contenders adding fresh dimension to the staying feature.
Among them is eight-year-old Deep Monster, a proven Group race performer who claimed his first major success in the G2 Kyoto Daishoten over 2400 metres before following up with victory in the G2 H.H. The Amir Trophy in Qatar. His proven stamina at the trip makes him a respected challenger stepping into elite company.
The second visitor is seven-year-old Rousham Park, who makes his third journey to Hong Kong in search of a breakthrough performance at the highest level. Trainer Hiroyasu Tanaka has long identified this contest as a key target, believing the step up to 2400 metres offers the gelding his ideal conditions.

“I became aware of this race during last year’s Hong Kong Cup,” Tanaka explained. “Since it is not a familiar race to Japanese racing people and fans, and because I believe this horse is better suited to 2400 metres than 2000 metres, we had been considering it as one of our target races.”
Rousham Park’s career has been defined by consistency at a high level. Bred by Northern Farm and owned by Sunday Racing Co. Ltd, he has captured notable victories in the G3 Hakodate Kinen and G2 Sankei Sho All Comers, both over 2000 metres, while also producing strong performances abroad, including a close second in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf over 2400 metres.
His international résumé includes runs in Hong Kong, Australia, and Japan’s top-level contests, with placings that underline his durability and adaptability. After undergoing throat surgery following his 2024 campaign, he has gradually worked his way back to form, returning with a promising third in the G2 Nikkei Sho earlier this year.
“After his last race, he recovered well and everything has gone smoothly,” Tanaka said, noting the horse’s preparation has been straightforward ahead of this assignment.

The trainer is particularly optimistic about conditions at Sha Tin Racecourse, where the gelding has already gained valuable experience. “Sha Tin has excellent quarantine facilities, and I think the track suits him well. He handles humidity and heat, and I believe 2400 metres is the right distance for him,” he added.
Rousham Park also arrives with renewed confidence following his latest domestic effort, and connections believe the strong tempo and extended trip could allow him to show his best.
Tanaka did not shy away from acknowledging the task ahead, particularly against Hong Kong’s dominant force. “Romantic Warrior is an exceptionally strong horse who has maintained his level for many years. I’m looking forward to competing against him,” he said.
With international challengers arriving in form and the home champion setting a high benchmark, Sunday’s feature promises a compelling tactical battle over the staying distance.
