Forever Young etched his name deeper into racing lore at King Abdulaziz Racecourse on Saturday, becoming the first horse to claim two victories in the prestigious Group 1 USD $20 million Saudi Cup. The 5-year-old champion, expertly trained by Yoshito Yahagi, displayed a masterclass in timing and determination to fend off a determined challenge from Nysos in a thrilling finish.
The race unfolded with Banishing (USA) and Thundersquall (GB) setting the early pace along the backstretch, while Nysos stayed in striking distance. Forever Young, guided by jockey Ryusei Sakai, settled just behind the leaders, hugging the rail in a tactical move that proved decisive. As the field turned into the home straight, Sakai found a gap along the inside and Forever Young surged forward, holding off Nysos by a length to cross the line in 1:51.027. Tumbarumba (USA) closed strongly to take third, ahead of Bishops Bay (USA).
This victory marked Forever Young’s third major win at the Saudi Cup meeting, adding to his previous triumph in the Saudi Derby and last year’s Saudi Cup success. The Japanese star also secured the G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2025, further cementing his status as a global dirt champion.
Tactical Brilliance and Global Stardom
Ryusei Sakai, reflecting on the performance, said, “He’s an amazing horse, two times in the Saudi Cup, and I just trust him. There was no pressure—this is my job every time. I’m very proud of him and want to thank everyone supporting the team.”
Trainer Yoshito Yahagi added, “He gave me an unbelievable feeling throughout the race. It’s not just my training; this horse is made like a champion. Our next target is the Dubai World Cup, and we’ll focus on that. Ryusei has grown into a really top-class jockey for us.”
Nysos’ connections were proud despite finishing second. Bob Baffert commented, “Forever Young is just so good. Nysos showed up and gave it his best, and that’s all you can ask for.”
Tumbarumba’s team were also delighted. Jockey James Doyle said, “I’m very proud of the horse and his young team. Running well here is brilliant.” Racing manager Case Clay added, “He stepped up in trip beautifully. We’ll regroup and possibly aim for the Dubai World Cup.”
Bishops Bay finished a solid fourth, with trainer Brad Cox praising the horse’s effort and consistency. Meanwhile, Joao Moreira, Oisin Murphy, and Joel Rosario all noted their horses ran commendably in a highly competitive field.
Forever Young’s emphatic win not only makes history at the Saudi Cup but continues the narrative of a globetrotting superstar capable of rising to the biggest occasions on the dirt.
