The Keeneland Cup (G3) will headline the Sunday programme at Sapporo Racecourse on August 23, with 16 runners set to contest the 1200-metre feature at 15:45 p.m. The race will be open to three-year-olds and older runners and will carry a stated race value of „82.6 million, making it one of the principal sprint contests on the card.
The field will bring together a blend of established performers and experienced riders, with Panja Tower, Namura Clara, Lucido, Win Carnelian and Sonnig among the notable names. International jockeys Damian Lane and Zac Lloyd will also take part, adding an overseas dimension to the Group 3 contest.
Sapporo Racecards 23 August
Panja Tower will be partnered by Kohei Matsuyama and will bring valuable familiarity with the Keeneland Cup into Sunday’s race. That experience will be significant over the 1200-metre journey, where runners will have little opportunity to recover from an inefficient start or an awkward position.
Namura Clara will have Suguru Hamanaka in the saddle. The combination will provide another experienced presence in a race that will require careful judgement from the opening stages. With a sizeable field assembled, finding the right position before the closing stages will be an important part of the task.
Lucido will be partnered by Australian jockey Damian Lane. The international rider will bring considerable experience to the Sapporo feature, while Lucido will face a strong examination against several established sprint performers.
Sonnig will have Zac Lloyd aboard. Lloyd will be another international rider in the field, and the partnership will add further interest to a race featuring a mixture of Japanese and overseas riding talent.
A T Makfi will be partnered by Akatsuki Tomita, while Jo Medvind will have Tomohiro Yoshimura in the saddle. Both runners will enter a field in which the margins are likely to be narrow over the six-furlong distance.
The remainder of the field will comprise Meiner Gerodi, Win Carnelian, Itsumo Nikoniko, Danon McKinley, Lila Emblem, Red Avanti, Logi Cape, Sound Moryana, A Shin Deed and Lord Four Aces.
The 1200-metre distance will demand precision from both horse and rider. Sprint contests will often be decided by the ability to secure an economical position before producing a sustained effort in the latter stages.
With 16 runners expected to go to post, the early pace will be an important consideration. Those positioned too far back could face difficulties making up ground, while runners committed too early could find the final stages demanding.
The Sapporo turf course will also require efficient handling of the turns before the runners reach the finishing straight. Jockeys will therefore have to balance the need for position with the importance of conserving energy for the final part of the race.
Win Carnelian will bring further experience to the field, while Danon McKinley and Sound Moryana will strengthen the depth of the sprinting line-up. Red Avanti, Lila Emblem and A Shin Deed will also feature among the runners expected to contribute to a closely contested Group 3 event.
The presence of several experienced runners will make the Keeneland Cup a useful examination of tactical speed, acceleration and finishing ability. The race will also provide an opportunity for the younger runners to measure themselves against more seasoned opposition.
International Riders Add Further Interest
The riding arrangements will provide another noteworthy element of the Keeneland Cup.
Damian Lane will take the ride on Lucido, while Zac Lloyd will partner Sonnig. Their involvement will add international experience to a field otherwise featuring a strong contingent of Japanese riders.
Suguru Hamanaka, Kohei Matsuyama, Akatsuki Tomita and Tomohiro Yoshimura will all bring extensive knowledge of Japanese racing. Their familiarity with the Sapporo circuit could prove valuable when judging pace, positioning and the timing of the final challenge.
For Panja Tower, the return to the Keeneland Cup will provide a particularly interesting element, while Namura Clara and Lucido will also attract attention among the leading names in the field. Behind them, the depth provided by Win Carnelian, Danon McKinley, Sound Moryana and the remaining runners will ensure a substantial test over the sprint distance.
The Keeneland Cup will consequently bring together a diverse field for Sunday’s 1200-metre feature, with established performers, experienced jockeys and international riding talent all set to converge at Sapporo.
