Sapporo Racecourse will stage The Sapporo Kinen (G2) on Sunday, August 16, with the 2,000-metre contest scheduled for 3:45pm. The race will be open to three-year-olds and older horses and will carry total prize money of 135,600,000 yen. The official Japan Racing Association listing will confirm a maximum field of 16 starters for the Group 2 feature.

The field will comprise 16 runners, with Onyankopon set to be partnered by Ryuto Yokoyama, Igatchi by Hayato Yoshida, Pink Jin by Hiroto Mayuzumi and Magic Sands by Kazuo Yokoyama. Ecoro Walz will have Takeshi Yokoyama aboard, while Rousham Park will be ridden by Kenichi Ikezoe.

Shohei will line up with Yuga Kawada, while Sakura Farrel will have Daisuke Sasaki in the saddle. Meiner Mond will be partnered by A. Saito and Admire Terra by Ryusei Sakai. Arata will have Takuya Ono aboard, while Zendan Hayabusa will be ridden by Manabu Sakai.

Gran Dia will have Atsuya Nishimura in the saddle, Readiness will be partnered by Norihiro Yokoyama, Shake Your Heart and Ho O Biscuits will be on the running field. The complete field will therefore bring together a broad range of established runners and developing performers.

The Sapporo Kinen will be contested over 2,000 metres on turf, placing a premium on a combination of pace, balance and stamina. The distance will give the runners sufficient time to settle before the decisive stages, while the final section will test which horses will be able to maintain their momentum.

Among the principal partnerships, Shohei and Yuga Kawada will add considerable interest to the feature, while Admire Terra will be partnered by Ryusei Sakai. Ecoro Walz will have the experienced Takeshi Yokoyama aboard, and Ho O Biscuits will line up with Yasunari Iwata. Magic Sands and Onyankopon will also arrive with established jockey partnerships.

The race will also carry an interesting recent history. Top Knife will have been the 2025 winner, while Arata will have finished third in that renewal. North Bridge will have won the 2024 edition, followed by Geoglyph and Stella Veloce, giving the 2026 field several runners with links to recent editions of the race.

The potential race shape will add another dimension to the contest. Ecoro Walz, Sakura Farrel and Ho O Biscuits will be among the runners capable of securing prominent positions, while others will have the option of settling further back before making their move. The ability to find a suitable position without using excessive energy will be important over the 2,000-metre journey.

The Sapporo Kinen will also represent one of the principal Group 2 events on the Japanese summer calendar. Its established status and substantial prize purse will ensure that the Sunday feature attracts significant attention, while the quality and depth of the field will provide a meaningful examination for every runner.

With 16 horses scheduled to take their place, the contest will offer a full and competitive line-up at Sapporo Racecourse. The experienced jockeys, proven performers and younger contenders will create a varied field, with each partnership facing the same task of producing a sustained effort across the 2,000-metre course.

The race will therefore provide a high-calibre test on Sunday afternoon, with the Sapporo Kinen set to headline the meeting. The 3:45pm start, Group 2 status and 135.6 million-yen prize fund will give the feature a prominent place on the day’s programme.

The Sapporo Race Cards 16 August will feature the Sapporo Kinen (G2) as the principal contest at Sapporo Racecourse. The 16-runner field will compete over 2,000 metres on turf at 3:45pm, with three-year-olds and older horses eligible to take part. The official race information will list total prize money of 135,600,000 yen.
