Sandown Racecourse came alive early on Thursday, January 8, as the Melbourne Racing Club’s midweek program unfolded with purpose and clarity. From the opening jump at 10:30am to the final stride just after 2:00pm, the eight-race card delivered competitive racing built on balance rather than hierarchy. With every contest carrying an identical purse of $55,000, the meeting placed the emphasis firmly on execution, timing, and depth, rewarding those who seized their moment rather than those shielded by status.
The tone was set immediately in Race 1 – Race Previews Plate, where Missapprehend, Miss Maranda, and Mystery ’N’ Drama shaped an engaging opener. Missapprehend, a three-year-old bay or brown filly trained by Ciaron Maher, showed composure and strength to land the first result of the day. Ridden positively by E P Brown, she travelled smoothly and found enough late to stop the clock at 1:25.14, asserting herself when it mattered most.
Speed was key in Race 2 – ive > Plate, where Per Favore, Covert Mission, and Vivarini excelled over the short distance. Per Favore delivered a crisp and efficient performance, accelerating sharply under C Williams to record a slick 58.05 seconds. Prepared by Anthony and Sam Freedman, the three-year-old bay filly showed sharp gate speed and never relinquished control once balanced.
Momentum continued in Race 3 – Green Tick Handicap, where Expulsion, Rodriquez, and Yolo emerged victorious and produced a high-tempo sprint. Expulsion, racing in the Godolphin colours, thrived under a confident ride from J L Melham. The filly responded cleanly when asked, stretching clear to score in 57.78 seconds and confirming her sharpness at this level.
The Freedman stable added further substance in Race 4 – Stow Storage Solutions Handicap, dominated by Two Wolves, Homeward, and Girls Night. Two Wolves, a four-year-old bay gelding, showed grit and resolve under L Currie, edging clear late to secure victory in 1:25.02. The result highlighted durability as much as speed, with the winner holding firm under pressure.
Endurance became the defining factor in Race 5 – Feed Handicap, where Scintillante, Fam Gorman, and Natural Ruler tackled the 2100-metre journey. Scintillante, trained by Cliff Brown, maintained a strong and even rhythm throughout. J Mott judged the tempo to perfection, guiding the brown geldng home in 2:13.15 after taking control approaching the straight.
A tactical battle unfolded in Race 6 – The Handicap, where Aliano, Tower Bridge, and Bold Strike delivered impressive wins. Aliano proved decisive at the business end, with J McNeil producing the four-year-old bay gelding at precisely the right moment. Trained by R D Griffiths, the winner crossed the line in 1:10.99, rewarding patience and timing.
Staying power came to the fore again in Race 7 – Thoroughbred Club of Australia Handicap, where Waco Kid, Itsukushima, and Desert Anthem triumphed a genuine mile. Waco Kid, trained by Julien Welsh and ridden by R McLeod, displayed determination to fend off late challengers, stopping the clock at 1:36.61 after asserting inside the final furlong.
The afternoon ended on a high note in Race 8 – More Places Handicap, as Fluent, Stellar Mofeed, and Escarpa stole the show. Fluent, a four-year-old brown mare trained by Andrew Noblet, finished with conviction under H T Coffey to record a winning time of 1:10.90, rounding out a meeting defined by competitiveness and clarity.
With uniform stakes and no headline act to overshadow the rest, Sandown Race Results 8 January stood as a showcase of depth, rewarding sharp riding, precise training, and horses ready to deliver on the day.
