There’s a quiet confidence in the camp of William Buick as he readies himself for one of the most historic opportunities in British flat racing. With Betfred 2000 Guineas winner Ruling Court and Betfred 1000 Guineas heroine Desert Flower both entered for the Betfred Derby Festival at Epsom Downs, the accomplished rider has the chance to do what no jockey has done before—win the first four British Classics of the season.

Buick’s 2025 campaign began on an extraordinary note with consecutive Classic victories, both coming under the famed royal blue silks of Godolphin and trained by Charlie Appleby. Their Guineas victories in Newmarket may have laid the foundation, but Epsom’s undulating challenge looms large.

Although history beckons, Buick remains firmly grounded. He stressed the importance of approaching the festival without looking too far ahead. His philosophy—focusing on each race individually—has served him well throughout his decorated career. And while both horses are stepping up in distance for the first time, their trainer and jockey are optimistic about their staying potential.

Ruling Court, a son of Justify, faces the demanding 12-furlong test of the Derby. Buick believes the colt possesses the right combination of balance, acceleration, and mental composure to thrive on Epsom’s unique course. His Guineas win, achieved with authority, demonstrated both maturity and tactical versatility—qualities essential for success over a mile and a half.

This isn’t the first time Buick has entered the Derby with high expectations. Back in 2018, he captured the race aboard Masar, also trained by Appleby. Drawing comparisons between the two horses, he noted that while their pedigrees differ, both arrived at Epsom with limited distance experience yet exuded class and composure.

The Derby field looks competitive once again, with Ralph Beckett’s Pride Of Arras gaining attention after an impressive performance in the Dante Stakes. Betfred’s latest odds list Delacroix as the favourite, with Ruling Court sitting just behind. Other notable contenders include The Lion In Winter and Midak, whose entry brings emotional resonance given the race’s tribute to the late His Highness Aga Khan IV.

For Buick, the ride on Desert Flower in the Oaks carries personal significance. Despite multiple previous attempts, the Oaks is the one Classic that’s eluded him. Desert Flower offers a genuine chance to complete his full Classic set. The filly’s victory in the 1000 Guineas displayed a strong turn of foot and tenacity—she led from the front and finished powerfully, suggesting the step up in trip may play to her strengths.

Her calm temperament and ability to settle mid-race are key attributes when tackling the Epsom course. Buick is optimistic that her adaptability and consistency will hold up against rising challengers like Minnie Hauk and Giselle, both of whom have proven stamina credentials.

As declarations close in, Desert Flower remains at the top of the betting for the Oaks, just ahead of an improving field. Punters have taken note of her strength in the closing stages at Newmarket, which could bode well for the climb to the line at Epsom.

Buick’s calm demeanor and laser-sharp focus underscore the magnitude of the weekend. Yet, in classic style, he remains intent on giving his best one race at a time. The magnitude of making history might be real, but for now, it’s just another ride, another challenge, and another opportunity to let the horses do the talking.
