Five days of high-class racing at Royal Ascot have reshaped the Cartier Racing Awards picture, with several standout performances strengthening the claims of Europe’s leading contenders. Bow Echo and Ombudsman have joined True Love at the top of the Horse of the Year standings after memorable victories during the prestigious meeting.

Established in 1991 to recognise excellence in thoroughbred racing, the 36th Cartier Racing Awards will be presented at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Wednesday, November 18, where the season’s leading performers will be honoured.

Cartier Racing Awards 2026 have become a major talking point among racing fans following a dramatic Royal Ascot, with several divisions now seeing new leaders emerge.

Bow Echo continued his remarkable rise by confirming his position as one of Europe’s leading three-year-old milers. After his impressive Betfred 2000 Guineas success, the George Boughey-trained colt secured another victory over Gstaad in the St James’s Palace Stakes, although the margin was reduced to a short-head in a much closer contest.

The homebred son of Night Of Thunder, bred by the late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, has collected 80 points from Pattern races this season. His latest success moved him to the top of the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt division while also placing him alongside True Love and Ombudsman in the overall Horse of the Year standings.

Bow Echo will now aim to maintain his unbeaten record when stepping up against older rivals in next month’s Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes, a race that could also feature Gstaad, who currently sits on 72 points.

Ombudsman produced one of the week’s most dominant displays with a commanding performance in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, defeating Minnie Hauk while Daryz finished third. The victory helped the Night Of Thunder colt strengthen his position in the Older Horse category.

With 80 points, Ombudsman now holds a narrow advantage over Daryz after an unbeaten campaign that has already included major victories in the Dubai Turf Sponsored By DP World and the Star Sports Brigadier Gerard Stakes.

Night Of Thunder enjoyed an outstanding Royal Ascot, with another of his progeny, Ten Bob Tony, making an impact in the Queen Anne Stakes and entering the conversation as an Older Horse contender with 56 points.

True Love remains the leader in the Three-Year-Old Filly division despite suffering a second consecutive defeat against Precise in the Coronation Stakes. The pair, both trained by Aidan O’Brien for Coolmore partnerships, continue to sit among the leading fillies of the season.

Diamond Necklace has also emerged as a strong contender after completing a Classic double in France with victory in the Prix de Diane Longines at Chantilly, adding further strength to the division.

The sprinting category has also seen movement, with Venetian Sun climbing to the top after winning the Commonwealth Cup. Mission Central and Almeraq also enhanced their claims after notable victories in the King Charles III Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes respectively.

The Stayer division now has a new leader in Scandinavia after a thrilling Gold Cup success over defending champion Trawlerman. The Coolmore-owned four-year-old recorded his sixth straight win in a memorable staying contest that also featured strong performances from Caballo de Mar, Sweet William and Al Nayyir.

The Cartier Racing Awards feature eight equine categories, including Horse of the Year, Older Horse, Sprinter, Stayer, Three-Year-Old Colt, Three-Year-Old Filly, Two-Year-Old Colt and Two-Year-Old Filly.

The final awards picture is decided through a combination of points earned in Pattern races, votes from racing journalists and handicappers, and public voting. Alongside the equine honours, the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit recognises individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to European racing and breeding.

As the season moves towards its closing stages, the latest Cartier Racing Awards standings underline how quickly the racing landscape can change, with Royal Ascot once again proving a defining moment in the championship race.
