The five-furlong contest saw Mission Central settle toward the rear under Ryan Moore before unleashing a powerful late surge along the stands’ side. Despite having plenty of ground to make up entering the final stages, the progressive performer found another gear to secure victory by a head.

Mission Central claimed the G1 King Charles III Stakes title in a dramatic sprint finish at Ascot.

Rayevka, trained by Francis-Henri Graffard, emerged as a major threat with a sharp late run of her own, while Australian challenger Overpass stayed on strongly after racing closer to the pace to finish third.

Mission Central arrived at Ascot with confidence after two victories over the distance in Ireland this season. The five-year-old had already shown his ability at the track after winning the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day Two-Year-Old Conditions Stakes last year, and he added another important chapter to his career with this success.

O’Brien praised the speed and development of Mission Central after the race, highlighting how the strong pace played into the horse’s strengths.

“Mission Central is a very fast horse. He is unbeaten this year and progressed with every run. They went hard, which suited him,” O’Brien said.

The trainer also credited Moore for a well-judged ride, with the jockey timing the late challenge perfectly as the field stretched across the track.

Moore admitted the finish was difficult to judge due to the runners being spread out but was delighted with the result.

“I thought I’d won, but it’s always hard when you’re so wide and far apart. Mission Central is a progressive horse. They went hard, he got into a nice rhythm and it worked out beautifully,” Moore said.

Rayevka’s performance earned plenty of respect despite narrowly missing out. Graffard explained that dropping back to five furlongs had been a key factor in bringing out her best.

“She has an amazing turn of foot over that distance. When she came, she really came strongly. It was a fantastic run,” Graffard said.

Overpass, representing Australia, also gave a bold account and finished third after travelling strongly through the race. Trainer Bjorn Baker was proud of his charge’s effort on international ground.

“He went super and did us very proud. He is a war horse to travel over,” Baker said, adding that the experience of competing at Ascot was something special for his team.

Mission Central’s victory adds further excitement to his season and strengthens his reputation as one of the leading sprinting talents on the international stage.
