Royal Ascot 2026 is set to once again captivate the racing world as Britain’s most prestigious Flat racing festival returns to Ascot Racecourse from June 16 to June 20, bringing together the sport’s finest horses, jockeys, trainers and owners for five unforgettable days of competition.

Steeped in more than three centuries of history and tradition, Royal Ascot remains one of the crown jewels of international racing. The meeting combines elite sporting competition with royal pageantry, attracting global attention and drawing runners from Britain, Ireland, France, the United States, Australia, Japan and the Middle East.

This year’s festival will feature a refreshed programme following a series of carefully considered changes designed to strengthen Royal Ascot’s international appeal while preserving the traditions that have made it one of the world’s most celebrated racing events.

With more than £10 million in prize money on offer and eight Group 1 races spread across five days, Royal Ascot 2026 promises another spectacular showcase of world-class Thoroughbred racing.

Subtle Changes For A Global Audience

While the character of Royal Ascot remains unchanged, officials have introduced several programme refinements aimed at enhancing the meeting’s global reach and improving race planning.

Among the most notable changes is the Windsor Castle Stakes, which will now be contested over six furlongs rather than its traditional five-furlong trip.

The Norfolk Stakes and Chesham Stakes have also exchanged positions in the schedule. The Norfolk Stakes will now take place on Saturday, increasing its exposure to international television audiences, particularly in North America, while the Chesham Stakes moves to Thursday.

Thursday’s programme has also been adjusted, with the Ascot Gold Cup and Britannia Stakes scheduled slightly earlier in the afternoon to avoid clashes with FIFA World Cup broadcasts.

Another important amendment sees the upper handicap rating limit for the Copper Horse Stakes reduced from 105 to 100, a move designed to support the Listed Grand Cup at York and provide a clearer progression route for staying horses.

Tuesday, June 16 – Royal Ascot Opens In Style

The opening day of Royal Ascot traditionally delivers some of the highest-quality racing of the entire week and 2026 will be no exception.

The Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes launches the festival before attention quickly turns to the St James’s Palace Stakes, one of Europe’s premier contests for three-year-old milers. The Coventry Stakes, often a proving ground for future stars, adds further quality to the card.

The King Charles III Stakes brings together some of the world’s fastest sprinters, while the Ascot Stakes, Wolferton Stakes and Copper Horse Stakes complete a compelling opening afternoon.

Prize money for the opening day stands at £2.765 million.

Wednesday, June 17 – Prince Of Wales’s Stakes Takes Centre Stage

Wednesday’s card is headlined by the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, widely regarded as one of Europe’s most important middle-distance races.

The Group 1 contest routinely attracts elite performers from across the globe and has become a key target for owners and trainers seeking international success.

Supporting races include the Queen Mary Stakes, Queen’s Vase and Duke of Cambridge Stakes, while the revised programme sees the Windsor Castle Stakes conclude the day’s action after the Royal Hunt Cup and Kensington Palace Stakes.

The total purse for Wednesday’s card reaches £2.11 million.

Thursday, June 18 – Gold Cup Day And Royal Ascot’s Greatest Prize

For many racing fans, Thursday represents the emotional and sporting centrepiece of Royal Ascot.

The historic Ascot Gold Cup, first run in 1807, remains the meeting’s most prestigious race and one of the world’s ultimate tests of stamina. Victory in the Gold Cup secures a place in racing history and has been achieved by some of the sport’s most celebrated stayers.

The Chesham Stakes now opens the card before the King George V Stakes and Ribblesdale Stakes build towards the day’s feature event.

The Britannia Stakes, Hampton Court Stakes and Buckingham Palace Stakes ensure another deep and competitive programme.

Thursday’s prize fund totals £1.62 million.

Friday, June 19 – Future Champions On Display

Friday showcases some of the most exciting three-year-olds in training through two outstanding Group 1 contests.

The Commonwealth Cup has quickly established itself as one of Europe’s leading sprint races for three-year-olds, while the Coronation Stakes consistently produces future stars among the fillies.

The Albany Stakes, King Edward VII Stakes, Duke of Edinburgh Stakes, Sandringham Stakes and Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes provide additional depth to a high-quality afternoon.

The card carries prize money of £2.135 million.

Saturday, June 20 – A Fitting Finale

Royal Ascot concludes with another stellar programme led by the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, one of the world’s premier sprint races.

The Norfolk Stakes now opens Saturday’s card before attention shifts to the Hardwicke Stakes, Jersey Stakes and the immensely popular Wokingham Stakes.

The Golden Gates Stakes and Queen Alexandra Stakes bring the curtain down on another Royal Ascot festival.

Saturday’s total prize fund stands at £2.015 million.

Racing’s Global Showcase Returns

Few sporting events can match Royal Ascot’s unique blend of heritage, excellence and international prestige.

Whether it is the historic Ascot Gold Cup, the championship quality of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, the brilliance of the St James’s Palace Stakes or the sprinting spectacle of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, Royal Ascot 2026 once again promises five remarkable days at the pinnacle of Thoroughbred racing.

With a refreshed programme, world-class competition and more than £10 million in prize money, the world’s attention will once again turn to Ascot in June for one of racing’s most anticipated festivals.
