Royal Ascot opened on Tuesday with one of the strongest Dubai contingents in recent memory, as horses who excelled during the Dubai World Cup Carnival and Meydan season arrived in Berkshire aiming to translate their winter success onto one of racing’s grandest stages.

The growing influence of Dubai’s racing programme is once again evident throughout the five-day meeting, with several Group 1 performers and Carnival stars featuring prominently in many of the week’s major contests.

Leading the charge is Opera Ballo, whose impressive victory in the G1 Jebel Hatta at Meydan established him among the leading milers of his generation. The Charlie Appleby-trained colt now faces a different examination in the G1 Queen Anne Stakes, where Ascot’s straight mile will test his adaptability against some of Europe’s best performers.

Appleby has acknowledged the unique demands of Ascot’s straight course, suggesting the race could reveal even more about Opera Ballo’s versatility than his recent victories. With jockey Billy Loughnane aboard, the Godolphin runner is expected to be among the principal contenders in one of the opening day’s headline events.

The Queen Anne Stakes also strengthens Appleby’s hand at the meeting, with stablemates First Conquest and Notable Speech adding further depth to a powerful Royal Ascot team.

Further Classic interest for the Newmarket trainer arrives in the G1 St James’s Palace Stakes, where Talk Of New York takes a significant step up in class. Third in the Jumeirah 2000 Guineas at Meydan, the colt now faces an elite field that includes Classic winners Bow Echo and Gstaad. While the challenge is considerable, connections believe further improvement is still to come from the progressive three-year-old.

Tuesday’s programme also highlights the strength of Dubai’s sprinting and middle-distance divisions.

In the Listed Wolferton Stakes, Arabian Light brings proven Meydan form into a competitive international contest that also features familiar Dubai campaigners including Galen and Dividend. The race provides another opportunity to assess how horses emerging from the Carnival season measure up against established European performers.

The sprint spotlight falls on the G1 King Charles III Stakes, where several runners with Dubai credentials line up over Ascot’s demanding five-furlong test.

Cover Up, winner of the G2 Blue Point Sprint at Meydan, heads the challenge after a productive winter campaign. Among his chief rivals is Rayevka, who gained valuable top-level experience when competing in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint earlier this season. Her connections believe the sharper five-furlong trip could prove ideal if the race is run at the strong tempo that traditionally characterises the King’s Stand successor.

The Meydan influence extends beyond Tuesday and remains a major storyline throughout the week.

Attention turns to Wednesday’s G1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes, where Ombudsman stands out as one of the meeting’s most significant Dubai graduates. A dual Group 1 winner and last year’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes hero, he returns seeking to defend his crown over 2000 metres. Facing seven rivals, the race is expected to be as tactical as it is competitive, but Ombudsman again appears central to the narrative.

The same afternoon also features the ever-competitive Royal Hunt Cup, where runners with Meydan experience include Holloway Boy, Archivist, No Retreat, War Socks and Erzindjan, further underlining the international flavour that now defines much of Royal Ascot’s supporting programme.

Thursday’s staying showpiece, the G1 Gold Cup, renews a rivalry forged in Dubai. Dubai Future, successful in the Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan earlier this year, returns to Ascot after finishing third in this race twelve months ago. He is joined by Caballo De Mar, runner-up in the Dubai Gold Cup, setting up another intriguing clash over Royal Ascot’s ultimate stamina test.

Dubai’s influence continues into the closing stages of the meeting.

Saturday’s G1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes features Lugal, who arrives after his runner-up effort in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint. He is joined by fellow Dubai performers Quinault and Regional, adding further depth to a highly competitive international sprint contest.

Meanwhile, the G2 Hardwicke Stakes brings together several horses who featured prominently during the Meydan season. West Wind Blows returns after his runner-up finish in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic, while Giavellotto and Ethical Diamond also renew acquaintances following notable performances in the same race.

The strength of Dubai’s representation this week reflects the increasingly close relationship between the two racing centres. Horses are now regularly able to campaign successfully through the Dubai winter before returning to Europe to compete at the highest level during the summer.

Dubai Racing Club’s Head of Racing Operations and International Relations, Erwan Charpy, highlighted that growing connection, noting how Dubai continues to serve as a launching platform for elite international performers heading into Europe’s premier meetings.

With Group 1 winners, Carnival stars and proven international performers spread throughout the programme, the influence of Meydan and the Dubai World Cup Carnival looks set to remain one of the defining stories of Royal Ascot 2026.Royal Ascot will be available to watch in the UAE on Dubai Racing Channel.
