At Sha Tin on Tuesday morning, attention turned firmly toward Sunday’s elite-distance contest as Hong Kong’s standout staying talent continued preparations for a rare place in racing history.

Champions & Chater Cup 2026

Romantic Warrior will take his shot at history when he lines up in Sunday’s HK$13 million G1 Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2400m) at Sha Tin, aiming to become only the third horse to complete Hong Kong’s coveted Triple Crown.

The eight-year-old star, trained by Danny Shum, is chasing a feat previously achieved only by River Verdon in 1993/94 and Voyage Bubble last season, having already secured victories in January’s G1 Stewards’ Cup (1600m) and March’s G1 Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup (2000m).

On Tuesday, the champion moved through a steady turf gallop on a rain-softened Sha Tin grass track, working alongside stablemate Romantic Thor under ideal, controlled conditions designed to maintain rhythm rather than test speed.

Romantic Thor, guided by Zac Purton, travelled fluently and led the pair down the back straight before both horses finished their exercise strongly, with Romantic Thor slightly ahead at the end of 1200m in 1m 17.3s.

Trainer Danny Shum was satisfied with the morning’s work, noting the balanced nature of the gallop and the relaxed approach taken with both runners as they build toward Sunday’s stamina test.

“It was just a normal gallop at a normal speed,” Shum said. “Both horses worked well and the riders were happy afterwards. It’s important they enjoy it.”

He also acknowledged the challenge ahead for his stable star stepping up to 2400m, a trip Romantic Warrior has tackled only once before when finishing second. However, Shum pointed to the horse’s maturity and improved tractability as encouraging signs.

“It’ll be a challenge. He’s getting older now, so he’s easier to control and hopefully he can handle the distance. He’s such a talented animal.”

The field assembling for the Champions & Chater Cup includes nine entries, with Romantic Thor among the key contenders. Others to work on the turf included Cap Ferrat, Winning Wing, and Numbers, each completing steady pieces of exercise as connections fine-tune final preparations.

Cap Ferrat covered 1200m in 1m 20.6s, while Numbers posted 1m 20.1s under jockey Derek Leung, both appearing comfortable in their morning routines.

Additional entries Ka Ying Generation, Gentlemen Legacy, Deep Monster, and Rousham Park remain in contention for what shapes as a true staying examination on one of Hong Kong racing’s most demanding stages.

Romantic Warrior enters the race with an extraordinary record, having earned more than HK$271 million in prize money and remaining unbeaten in five starts this season, including another commanding top-level double on Champions Day in April.

His only previous attempt at 2400m came in 2023 when finishing second behind Russian Emperor, a performance that now serves as both experience and reference point for this year’s renewed challenge.

Unbeaten since undergoing fetlock surgery last year, the gelding continues to be rated among the world’s elite, recently sharing second spot in the LONGINES World’s Best Racehorse Rankings.

Across a remarkable 30-start career spanning Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates, Romantic Warrior has recorded 23 wins and five runner-up finishes, cementing his place among modern racing’s most accomplished performers.
