Ripon Racecourse staged a competitive seven-race card on Saturday, August 15, featuring a strong mix of novice contests and handicap races. The afternoon included several notable events, with the William Hill/MND Association Great St Wilfrid Handicap Stakes providing the highest-value race on the programme. Across the card, runners battled over distances ranging from six furlongs to a mile and four furlongs.

The William Hill/MND Association Great St Wilfrid Handicap Stakes, run over six furlongs, was one of the main attractions of the afternoon. Royal Zabeel, ridden by Jason Watson, emerged as the winner of the Class 2 contest. The race formed part of a programme supporting awareness around motor neurone disease (MND), adding an important charitable dimension to the day’s racing.

The opening contest at 1:45pm was the Juddmonte EBF Restricted Novice Stakes, a Class 2 event for horses in Bands C and D and an EBF Restricted Race Qualifier. Run over one mile, the race saw Coral Cove, partnered by Jason Hart, take the honours. The contest provided an opportunity for emerging horses to gain valuable experience over the longer distance.

At 2:20pm, the Racing for Tamara Ripon Hornblower EBF Novice Stakes was contested over six furlongs. The Class 2 GBB race attracted a field of developing runners, with Rogue Jewel, ridden by Daniel Tudhope, finishing as the winner. The six-furlong trip produced a fast-paced contest in which the runners had little margin for error.

The afternoon then moved to the William Hill Supporting MND Silver Cup Handicap Stakes at 2:55pm. The Class 4 race was also run over six furlongs and featured a competitive group of runners. Woodstock, with Oisin Orr in the saddle, came through to claim victory, adding another success to the afternoon’s results.

The feature Great St Wilfrid Handicap Stakes followed at 3:25pm. The Class 2 race over six furlongs was one of the most eagerly anticipated contests on the card. Royal Zabeel, partnered by Jason Watson, secured the top position, providing a standout result in one of Ripon’s most prominent sprint events.

The 3:55pm race was the William Hill World Free From MND Handicap Stakes, a Class 4 contest over one mile. Murashah, ridden by Oisin Orr, finished first in the race. The event continued the day’s association with MND awareness while offering runners a different test from the earlier sprint contests.

At 4:30pm, attention turned to the Ashley Smith Memorial William Hill Fillies’ Handicap Stakes. The Class 5 contest was staged over one mile, four furlongs and 10 yards, making it the longest race of the afternoon. Clocker, with Oisin Orr aboard, took victory in the extended-distance contest.

The final race of the day, the Harrogate Comedy Festival Coming This Autumn Handicap Stakes, got underway at 5:05pm. The Class 6 event covered one mile, one furlong and 170 yards. Saxon Grace, partnered by Shane Gray, completed the afternoon’s winners by securing the final race.

Saturday’s Ripon programme therefore produced seven different winners across a varied card. Coral Cove began the afternoon with success in the opening mile contest, while Rogue Jewel and Woodstock followed in the two subsequent races. Royal Zabeel delivered the result in the feature Great St Wilfrid Handicap, before Murashah, Clocker and Saxon Grace rounded off the day’s action.

With races ranging from sprint distances to an extended mile and four furlongs, the Ripon card offered a broad test of speed, stamina and consistency. The results also highlighted a number of successful jockey performances, with Oisin Orr recording victories on Woodstock, Murashah and Clocker during the afternoon.
