Multiple graded-stakes winner Reef Runner has returned to the United States following his Middle East campaign, with connections planning a short break before the accomplished gelding resumes his season at Gulfstream Park.

After nearly two months abroad, Reef Runner travelled back across the Atlantic this week, his journey including a refuelling stop in England before continuing on to Kentucky. There, the 5-year-old will undergo a brief quarantine under the supervision of Scott Blasi, assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, before moving on for a period of rest.

From Kentucky, Reef Runner is scheduled to spend time at Sandhurst Thoroughbreds in Ocala, where he will enjoy a short freshening phase. Trainer David Fawkes indicated the break is both routine and necessary after a demanding international stint.

“He’ll be there for three weeks and then he’s going to come to Gulfstream and start a new campaign,” Fawkes said. “It usually takes him a week to settle and then a couple of weeks in the field. He’s a good turnout horse — he relaxes, grazes, and switches off. He’s been there before and is well looked after.”

Reef Runner Dubai Effort Shows His Class

Reef Runner’s most recent outing came in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan on March 28, where he finished fourth, beaten less than two lengths in a tightly contested finish. While not victorious, the performance drew praise from his trainer given the unusual conditions.

Heavy rainfall in Dubai during race week left the turf surface softer than expected, a factor Fawkes believes played against his charge’s strengths.

“He ran a good race. I don’t think he loved that racetrack,” Fawkes explained. “We had several days of rain, which is rare there, and it changed the surface. He prefers a firmer track, like what he gets at Gulfstream. Even so, he still put in a strong effort.”

Despite not being entirely comfortable underfoot, Reef Runner remained competitive throughout, underlining his consistency at the highest level.

Saudi Victory Highlights Reef Runner Campaign

Earlier in the trip, Reef Runner enjoyed a significant success in Riyadh, landing the Group 2 1351 Turf Sprint on February 14. That victory pushed his career earnings beyond the $1 million mark and set the tone for a productive international campaign.

Combined with his Dubai placing, Reef Runner added $1.275 million to his earnings this year, taking his overall tally to more than $1.9 million from 24 starts. His record includes multiple notable performances at Gulfstream Park, where he has been a familiar and effective presence.

Among his highlights at the Florida venue are victories in the 2024 Bob Umphrey Sprint on Tapeta and two wins in 2025 — the Warrior’s Pride overnight handicap and the Janus Stakes on turf, the latter closing out his 4-year-old season in December.

Gulfstream Park Return in Sight

With his overseas commitments now complete, Reef Runner’s focus shifts back to domestic competition. His return to Gulfstream Park is expected to mark the beginning of another carefully managed campaign, with his team confident that familiar surroundings and preferred conditions will bring out the best in him once again.

Fawkes also reflected positively on the overall experience abroad, noting both the professionalism and hospitality encountered throughout the trip.

“It was very safe, very clean, and everyone was welcoming,” he said. “The whole experience was excellent, both on and off the track.”

For now, Reef Runner will enjoy a quieter period, but expectations remain high for his return to action as one of the more consistent and accomplished sprinters in training.
