The 151st running of the Preakness Stakes arrives with a sense of transition and occasion, as one of American racing’s most storied events is staged away from its traditional home for the first time in its modern history. The Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown will be run at Laurel Park, while Pimlico Race Course undergoes redevelopment ahead of its return to hosting duties next year.
Preakness Stakes 2026 preview
A full field of 14 three-year-olds assembles for the occasion, marking the largest lineup since 2011, when Shackleford edged 13 rivals in a fiercely contested renewal. The depth of the field has added intrigue to a race already carrying historical weight, with form lines from across the spring converging on a single, decisive afternoon.
Trainer Chad Brown once again finds himself at the centre of attention, sending out Iron Honor, who has emerged as a leading contender in early race assessments. Speaking ahead of the contest, Brown reflected on the race’s enduring significance, noting the prestige attached to the Woodlawn Vase and the tradition that continues regardless of venue.
“It’s still obviously a very historic race,” Brown said. “There’s a lot of tradition associated with the event.”
The presence of Iron Honor adds another layer to Brown’s strong record in the race, having previously secured victories with Cloud Computing in 2017 and Early Voting in 2022. The colt, by Nyquist, has shown both promise and vulnerability in a brief but eventful career, including a troubled effort in the Wood Memorial before rebounding from earlier encouraging performances.
At the rider’s gate, Flavien Prat takes the mount, bringing prior Classic success in the race to the partnership.
The narrative of the race extends beyond established names, with unbeaten Taj Mahal representing a potential breakthrough story for trainer Brittany Russell. Based in Maryland, Russell has guided the colt through an unbeaten three-race progression, all at Laurel, culminating in a commanding victory in the Federico Tessio that secured entry into this elite contest.
Despite the growing attention surrounding potential milestones, Russell has kept focus firmly on execution rather than history.
“It’s the same job no matter who you are,” she said. “We’re just trying to get a horse to a horse race.”
Taj Mahal will be partnered by Sheldon Russell, adding a familiar connection within the stable team.
Among the principal challengers is Incredibolt, trained by Riley Mott, who arrives off a strong seasonal campaign that included a decisive Virginia Derby success. Chip Honcho, representing the powerful yard of Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, brings proven graded-level form and a carefully managed preparation targeting this assignment.
Also in the mix is Ocelli, who turned heads with a strong finishing effort in the Kentucky Derby, closing from well back to finish prominently and now seeking to convert that late flourish into a breakthrough victory.
The field is further strengthened by Napoleon Solo, Great White, Pretty Boy Miah, The Hell We Did, Talkin, Bull by the Horns, Corona de Oro, Crupper, and Robusta, completing a line-up that reflects both emerging talent and seasoned campaigners.
Race-day conditions and tactical depth are expected to play a defining role, with several runners showing versatile pace profiles that could shape a demanding contest over 1 3/16 miles.
