Woodbine Racetrack staged a competitive renewal of the $125,000 Fury Stakes on Saturday, where the spotlight ultimately fell on a determined late charge in the seven-furlong contest for Canadian-foaled three-year-old fillies. The race unfolded with early speed, tactical positioning, and a strong finish that rewarded patience in the final strides.

Bossy Candy set the tone early, breaking sharply from the gates and taking command soon after leaving the chute. The filly dictated a smooth rhythm through the opening stages, posting a relaxed 23.60 for the first quarter while maintaining control of the six-runner field.
Tracked closely in second, Piper’s Gift travelled comfortably under Rafael Hernandez, settling just off the pace and keeping a watchful eye on the leader. Behind them, Pageant Queen and Mathematical ran in tandem, while highly regarded Corsia Veloce—making her much-anticipated three-year-old debut—sat poised in mid-pack. Katie’s Grace remained at the rear in the early exchanges.
Bossy Candy continued to roll along efficiently, reaching the halfway mark in 46.60 and still holding a narrow advantage. As the field approached the far turn, Corsia Veloce was asked to improve and began a wide, three-path move, signalling a serious challenge.
Turning for home, Bossy Candy appeared to have stolen a decisive break, carving out strong fractions and opening daylight on the field as the clock struck 1:10.40 for six furlongs. Yet the race was far from over.
Inside the final sixteenth, Piper’s Gift suddenly re-energised, responding sharply when called upon and producing a decisive burst down the outside. In the closing strides, she reeled in the leader and edged clear to secure victory in 1:23.21, marking a polished and well-timed performance. Corsia Veloce, despite her bold move, was unable to sustain the momentum and had to settle for third, while Katie’s Grace completed the order.
Trained by Dale Desruisseaux and representing Chiefswood Stables Limited, Piper’s Gift once again demonstrated her affinity for Woodbine’s synthetic surface. The bay filly has now maintained a flawless record over Tapeta, continuing a consistent pattern of strong finishing efforts.
Jockey Rafael Hernandez, who has partnered her throughout her campaign, credited timing and composure for the result, highlighting the importance of patience before launching her finishing run.
Connections also noted the filly’s development since her seasonal return, with her connections weighing future targets carefully as she builds toward longer-term objectives, including a potential tilt at top-level summer assignments for Canadian-foaled fillies.
With this victory, Piper’s Gift further strengthens her reputation as one of the leading performers in her division, adding another graded success to her growing record and reaffirming her status as a filly with both versatility and a potent finishing kick.
