Del Mar heads into Saturday’s 36th Pacific Classic with an 11-runner field that brings together established California performers, major shippers and a Japanese visitor making a first appearance outside home soil.
Pacific Classic 2026
Pacific Classic 2026 will be run on Saturday, August 22, over 1¼ miles at Del Mar, with a $1 million purse.
Most of the runners have completed their serious preparation, leaving the final days for routine gallops, paddock schooling and gate practice. The emphasis now is on keeping the horses fresh and comfortable before the major assignment.
Subsanador received one of the more notable midweek preparations. The Richard Mandella-trained Argentine-bred covered three furlongs in 36.40 seconds on Wednesday, the fastest of 12 horses working at the distance that morning. It was a short effort following a series of longer works, designed to keep the horse moving without taking too much out of the preparation.
The seven-year-old will break from post four and will be partnered by Mike Smith. His preparation has been closely watched as he returns to the scene of a major international race.
Knightsbridge has drawn the outside post in the 11-horse field after making the journey west from Saratoga. The Bill Mott trainee enters the race following a dominant 10¼-length victory in the Monmouth Cup, a performance that produced a 122 Beyer Speed Figure.
He has already had several opportunities to become familiar with the Del Mar main track since arriving late Saturday. The Pacific Classic will also stretch him from 1⅛ miles to 1¼ miles, adding another dimension to his assignment.
Pacific Classic 2026 will therefore provide Knightsbridge with a very different test from his latest victory, particularly over the longer distance.
Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. has two runners in the field, Forged Steel and Navajo Warrior, both of whom have settled into their surroundings after travelling west.
Navajo Warrior has particularly strong ties to Southern California. The runner began an earlier campaign in the region and broke the maiden at Del Mar in 2024 before later producing a three-race winning sequence at Santa Anita. A return to the seaside track now gives the runner another opportunity on familiar ground.
Forged Steel also arrives with recent California form. The four-year-old produced a major performance in the Grade 2 Hollywood Gold Cup at Santa Anita in May, winning by 9½ lengths.
Malarchuk, who finished second in that contest, will also line up at Del Mar. The Michael McCarthy trainee has raced primarily on the East Coast during the earlier stages of the career and will have the benefit of using his own stall at the track.
Full Serrano brings perhaps the strongest course connection among the field. The Argentine-bred made a first U.S. appearance at Del Mar in August 2024 and later returned to the venue to record the biggest victory of the career in the Dirt Mile.
The John Sadler trainee has completed a six-furlong work in 1:11 and has also gone through paddock schooling this week. Further gate practice is planned before Saturday.
Finger adds an international dimension to the race and is aiming to become the first Japanese winner of the Pacific Classic. The three-year-old arrived in Los Angeles on Friday, completed quarantine and travelled to Del Mar on Sunday.
The Japanese runner has continued regular morning activity since arriving and is scheduled for paddock schooling and gate work before race day. This will be the first overseas start of his career, making the trip as much a test of adaptability as racing ability.
Pacific Classic 2026 has also attracted Original Sin, Hit Show and British Isles, completing a varied field of 11.
With the serious work largely complete, there is little left for the connections to do beyond maintaining fitness, routine and composure. The final examination will come on Saturday when the field lines up for 1¼ miles at Del Mar.
The race is scheduled as Race 10, with post time listed for 6:30 p.m. local time.
This is a race preview, so there is no finish order yet. The confirmed 11-runner field is Om N Joy, Forged Steel, Finger, Subsanador, Malarchuk, Original Sin, Hit Show, British Isles, Navajo Warrior, Full Serrano and Knightsbridge.
