Jockey William Buick is set for a tactical test this Saturday as he reunites with star miler Notable Speech in a bold attempt to conquer the six-furlong Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup at Newmarket. The Group One contest, held on the concluding day of the prestigious Debenhams July Festival, will mark the colt’s first career start over a sprint distance — a challenge Buick believes is “worth a try.”
A proven performer over the mile, Notable Speech has delivered standout wins in the 2000 Guineas and the Sussex Stakes, affirming his status among the elite in the 2024 season. Despite two underwhelming results in the Lockinge Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes, the Godolphin-owned runner remains a horse with blistering pace and a powerful cruising speed. His connections have taken the unconventional step of supplementing him into Saturday’s sprint for a significant fee, a move that reflects their confidence in his adaptability.
Buick, twice champion jockey, expressed optimism over the shift in tactics, noting the colt’s natural speed and his ability to cope with stronger early fractions. While the switch to six furlongs is uncharted territory, the horse’s pedigree and racing style suggest he could thrive if the race unfolds to suit his rhythm. Trainer Charlie Appleby had initially been eyeing the City Of York Stakes for the four-year-old, but circumstances and the horse’s potential for explosive finishes prompted this ambitious entry.
The July Cup will also feature another Appleby-trained runner, Symbol Of Honour. A promising three-year-old, he recently secured a determined victory in the Sandy Lane Stakes and continues to impress. However, Buick made it clear that Notable Speech, with his glittering record and higher profile, remains his top ride for the day.
In addition to the July Cup, Buick will be aboard Saba Desert in the Group Two bet365 Superlative Stakes. The two-year-old made a successful debut at Sandown and is tipped to show even more over Newmarket’s seven-furlong course. Buick praised the colt’s progression and hinted that the colt could make a serious impact if the race develops at a stronger tempo than his maiden effort.
Looking ahead to Friday’s Falmouth Stakes, Buick also shared his thoughts on Cinderella’s Dream, another consistent performer from Appleby’s yard. After a determined runner-up finish at Royal Ascot, the filly is expected to benefit from returning to a straight mile. Buick believes the Falmouth track layout may suit her better and described her as a genuine, adaptable contender with the right mix of talent and toughness.
With a string of exciting rides and high-profile races on the horizon, Buick enters the weekend with cautious confidence. Whether it’s the speed test of the July Cup, the developmental promise of the Superlative Stakes, or the Group One ambition of Cinderella’s Dream, the top jockey is poised for an action-packed and potentially rewarding few days at Newmarket.
