The racing world is in mourning following the sudden passing of Tommie Jakes , a gifted young apprentice jockey whose vibrant career was only just beginning to blossom. At just *19 years old,* Jakes had already established himself as one of the most promising names on the British Flat racing circuit – a rider of poise, promise, and quiet determination.
Jakes passed away earlier this week at his home near Newmarket , Suffolk.

Jakes’ journey in racing began with quiet determination and remarkable natural ability. He celebrated his first win in March 2023 aboard Suzi’s Connoisseur at Lingfield for Jane Chapple-Hyam — a debut that instantly drew attention to his composed riding style and instinctive race awareness.

Soon after, he joined the George Boughey stable , where he quickly established himself as one of the most promising apprentices in Britain.

In just three seasons, Tommie Jakes amassed 59 career wins from over 500 rides , earning respect across the industry for his focus and professionalism.He enjoyed a strong 2025 campaign, riding 19 winners from 188 mounts – an impressive record for a teenager still refining his craft.

His final winner came on October 18, 2025 , aboard Fouroneohfever for Boughey at Catterick, only days before taking his final ride at Nottingham.
Those who knew him describe Jakes as humble, hardworking, and endlessly passionate about horses.

Brant Dunshea, Chief Executive of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Tommie Jakes, calling him “a talented young rider with the world at his feet.” Dunshea extended heartfelt condolences to Jakes’ family, his colleagues at the George Boughey yard, and the Newmarket community, noting that the entire racing fraternity shares in their grief. He added that the BHA and the sport’s welfare teams are providing support to those affected and confirmed that marks of respect would be observed at Chelmsford Racecourse and racecourses nationwide in Tommie’s memory.

Beyond numbers and victories, Tommie Jakes will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and deep love for the sport. His journey was brief, yet it left a lasting impression on everyone who witnessed his rise.
