Looking Ahead: Honouring Valda Embiricos on 23 August

The excitement will continue just a week later when the 355th Newmarket Town Plate takes centre stage on Saturday, 23 August 2025. This year’s renewal will be run in honour of the late Valda Embiricos, who passed away on 16th July at the age of 92.

A trailblazer for women in racing, Valda’s career spanned riding, breeding, ownership, and racing administration. Her victory in the Town Plate in 1955 aboard Vuples mirrored her mother Eileen Joel’s triumph exactly a century earlier, and her daughter Alex’s win in 1984 completed an extraordinary three-generation legacy.

This year’s race, shortened to two miles and a furlong due to dry conditions, will be staged entirely on the July Course, offering a rare and intimate spectacle. With its roots stretching back to 1666 under the patronage of King Charles II, the Town Plate remains a jewel of racing heritage and in 2025, it will be an emotional tribute to one of the sport’s most remarkable figures.
