The sixth race on the card at the Royal Western India Turf Club’s Mumbai Meeting 2025/26, held on Sunday, 22nd February 2026, saw VEGATHA produce a decisive effort in The Florrie and Freddy Sopher Gold Trophy. Run over 1200 metres at 06:30 PM, the Class III handicap for Indian horses rated 40 to 66 (20 to 39 eligible) unfolded at a brisk tempo before the P. S. Chouhan-trained runner asserted authority in the closing stages. Owned by Mr Cheriyan Abraham and Mrs Smita Bajoria representing Cherie Sports Private Limited, VEGATHA was guided with confidence by jockey R. Ajinkya to secure a well-earned victory in this competitive sprint.
In what will be remembered as a key highlight of the Mumbai race result 22 February, the contest developed at genuine early fractions, with several runners vying for forward positions. VEGATHA was settled just off the leading pack, travelling comfortably while the pace unfolded ahead. Turning for home, R. Ajinkya angled his mount into clear running, and once asked for an effort, VEGATHA responded smartly. The acceleration inside the final furlong proved decisive, allowing the gelding to draw clear and seal the race with authority.
STORM CLOUD, trained by Narendra Lagad and ridden by Bharat Singh, kept on resolutely to claim second place, while MANOR HOUSE, under S. G. Prasad for trainer Aman Altaf Hussain, finished third after staying on steadily in the concluding stages. The trio emerged clear of the remainder, underlining the quality at the head of the field.
With the evening programme moving swiftly ahead, attention now shifts to the upcoming The Corfe Castle Trophy scheduled for 07:15 PM, where another competitive field is set to line up on an engaging Mumbai card.
