Gulfstream Park will host a competitive 10-race programme on Saturday, with Moonstrocity set to return to stakes company in the $100,000 Carry Back. The Blue Rose Farm LLC-owned colt arrives with valuable experience against top-level opposition and will look to regain winning form over a surface that could suit his racing style.
Moonstrocity enters the Carry Back Stakes with a proven record against strong competition.
The son of Tiz the Law has already tested himself on the Triple Crown trail, when trainer Jena Antonucci gave him an opportunity in the Blue Grass Stakes, one of the major Kentucky Derby preparation races.
Moonstrocity headed into that contest after finishing third in a Gulfstream Park maiden special weight event. Antonucci, who made history with Arcangelo in the 2023 Belmont Stakes, believed the colt deserved the chance to take on elite rivals.
The Blue Grass Stakes did not go as planned, however, as Moonstrocity was held at the back of the field before finishing seventh in the seven-horse field over 1 1/8 miles.
Antonucci explained that the strategy was to allow Moonstrocity to settle early before making a late move, but the race did not develop in his favour. The trainer remains encouraged by the colt’s attitude and ability.
Moonstrocity quickly responded in his next start, breaking his maiden in impressive fashion over a one-mile trip at Gulfstream Park. The performance showed the colt had moved forward from his difficult stakes appearance and remained mentally strong.
The Carry Back Stakes will give Moonstrocity another chance to prove himself.
The Kentucky-bred colt returned to the Tapeta surface last time out in the 1 1/16-mile Not Surprising Stakes, where he finished fourth. Saturday’s return to the main track and a one-turn distance could provide another important test.
The Carry Back Stakes is scheduled to feature Moonstrocity among a field of eight runners, with the colt looking to rediscover his best form.
Wayne’s Law, another son of Tiz the Law, is expected to provide strong opposition. Trained by Amador Sanchez, Wayne’s Law arrives after competing on the Road to the Kentucky Derby and finishing fifth in the Curlin Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park.
The Carry Back Stakes could reveal whether Moonstrocity is better suited to shorter trips or longer races. Antonucci believes the colt still has more to show before a clear preference is established.
The Gulfstream Park feature will be an important step in Moonstrocity’s development as he takes on another demanding group of three-year-olds.
