Godolphin homebred Maycocks Bay announced himself as a major force on the North American racing scene with a commanding front-running display in Saturday’s Grade 2 Eclipse Stakes at Woodbine, securing the first stakes victory of his career in emphatic fashion.

Maycocks Bay Eclipse Stakes win.

Making his first appearance at Woodbine and his debut on an all-weather surface, the five-year-old gelding delivered a performance full of authority and determination, leading throughout the $175,000 contest and holding off challengers in the closing stages to earn a deserved breakthrough at graded level.

Ridden confidently by Sofia Vives, Maycocks Bay broke sharply and moved straight to the front in the 1 1/16-mile main-track feature for older runners. The son of Speightstown quickly established a sizeable advantage over Stanley House and the remainder of the field, setting a strong pace from the outset.

After covering the opening quarter-mile in 23.69 seconds, Maycocks Bay had already opened a five-length lead. His advantage continued to grow through a half-mile in 47.08 seconds, stretching to nine lengths while Stanley House remained in pursuit. Church and State, Runaway Again, Jokestar, Swift Delivery and Tosen Wish (IRE) followed behind.

Trained by Michael Stidham, the gelding maintained his momentum around the far turn, travelling powerfully while nearly a dozen lengths clear. Although the margin narrowed in the straight as rivals began to close, the outcome never appeared seriously in doubt.

Crossing the wire in a final time of 1:43.05, Maycocks Bay scored by two lengths from Stanley House, while supplemented runner Runaway Again finished a neck further back in third. Swift Delivery completed the first four home.

“I heard that he’s a very eager horse, he likes to be forward,” said Vives. “He’s quick on his own. If you grab him, it’s like pulling against the wall, so I just had to find a happy rhythm.

“In the first turn on this surface, he was just floating, so I figured he was going to open up a little bit. But when we turned for home, we had plenty of horse to keep pulling away.”

Assistant trainer Parker Hendricks said the team had been optimistic about the horse’s chances despite his lack of experience on the Woodbine surface.

“We’re fortunate enough, this horse has been based down at Fair Hill Training Center for the last six or eight weeks, and he has galloped on it and worked on it, and he had a really nice breeze over the surface about two weeks ago, his second to last work, so we were pretty confident he would handle the surface.”

The victory represented a significant milestone for Maycocks Bay, whose previous graded stakes efforts included a fourth-place finish in the Louisiana Stakes (G3) and a third in the Mineshaft Stakes (G3) last season. He entered the Eclipse Stakes after finishing third in a Keeneland turf contest on April 26.

The Eclipse Stakes success also highlighted the patience shown by connections, with the gelding steadily progressing through the ranks before producing the standout performance of his career. His ability to adapt instantly to a new surface and venue suggested there could be further major opportunities ahead during the remainder of the season.

Hendricks praised the horse’s natural athleticism and enthusiasm.

“He’s a very exuberant horse,” he said. “I actually ride him myself. He is very fast, so he doesn’t really feel like he’s going that fast.”

Bred in Kentucky, Maycocks Bay broke his maiden at the second attempt at Parx in September 2023 and has continued to develop into a consistent performer. His dominant Eclipse Stakes victory now gives him a valuable graded success to accompany his steadily improving record.

The afternoon proved especially rewarding for Godolphin, which also captured the Grade 3 Belle Mahone Stakes at Woodbine with fellow homebred Deloraine.
